It takes some mods to make the DR great. But i think its much better road bike. And is very capable off road. Dr doesnt have a weak plastic subframe like the 690. My 690 would always hit false nuetrals between 4/5..and 5/6. Steering angle is tight on 690. Just to name a few off the top.. ill make a video on it soon.

You would of loved my 05 DR650 as well. I had every mod shown here but for that cool fairing/windscreen. But went further with the suspension, carb, engine etc. I put on a Mikuni TM40 first,,you could actually let out the clutch at idle and take off and get this shift to second with no throttle input, and yes even to third and then give it some gas and take off on level ground..But it had more than the carb. It also had the higher compression JE piston, webcam, and the big valve head. I wanted the stock bore left alone however for some revs. Yes, a DR that would actually power wheelie throttle only in third gear without thinking about it on the street. I decided to try the complete rear shock change and went with the Ricor and aftermarket progressive springs in front with the intimidators,,yeah I know spelled it wrong.lol! My brother had the opposite full race tech set up and I wanted to compare on his DR650. It was so awesome compared to the stock shock dampening wise..no hopping rear tire on stutter bumps or harsh bottoming. Get up on the pegs in 3rd or 4th on Jeep trails and just rip, jump and wheelie,,,good times. My stupid Ricochet skid plate was my only mistake..should of gotten the better longer more made to fit unit. The way they hook up caused a mounting bolt to punch the center case on a minor scrape at 30-40 mph on a rock that was sticking up a little to high with the suspension compression up on the pegs...I split the cases and fixed it...on the bright side the bike was very popular, and its even still featured in a pic on web bike world before it was even half done years ago...dunno if its still there,,but that was my 05. I sold it for 6500 in 2011 and got a new KTM690 enduro R...Great bike and fun but not the simplicity and tank like reliability of the good old DR...Its sold now and believe it or not I am shopping for a good used DRZ 400s then just do a carb swap and suspension upgrades and seat and have some fun....Im in my 50's now and don't ride nearly as much or far and its plenty enough bike for me to fill my need to ride when I feel like it....sorry for the book and I hope you got a lot for that beautiful DR650!

Wow isn’t it amazing how things become full circle, when I was thinking of buying a DR650 back in 2018 I seen the build of this actual bike through Rocky Mountain ATV, which basically put me over the edge to buy one. Also I watched Barry’s videos on how to mod my dr650’s carby and exhaust system, the mans a legend when it comes to enduro. As an Australian I always got a laugh out of Barry’s videos because of his sense of humour. This bike is awesome and it’s an excellent example of what a dr650 can be, and I should know because I’ve got one.

Good to see a mature guy posting. I'm 56 and debating getting a DR. Got my first bike, a Honda SL70, when I was 5 years old. Never owned a bicycle. Been on two wheels all my life. Last dirt bike, XR200 bored and enhanced, was in '99. Went through a few RM and PE Suzuki's during my journey to "senior" status. Then the road adventures phase. Out grew the Harley stage and wanting to get back to my roots. Maybe the TAT. Am I to old for a DR? Still fairly fit. Six feet tall, 205 pounds. No, not retired and definitely don't have a desk job. I'm Jonesing bad for another scooter and think a duel sport is the way to go. Input?

@@davidtennyson4908 Like many others have said here, the DR650 is a great dual sport bike. I personally rode this one around southern Utah last fall (I am Tyler's brother) and I own my own 2007 DR650 that I have done many mods on. This one blew my bike out of the water! A lot of the mods that you will see on DR650s are cheap mods like adding PVC pipe into the front forks on top of the springs to increase the preload and stiffen them up. I made a video about how to replace the stock choke with a drawer pull for a knob. At one point I had a cutting board for a top rack. This bike has none of the cheap mods. Rocky Mountain took everything that needed to be added/updated to this bike, but did it RIGHT. It is hands down one of the most solid and capable (and best looking) DR650s out there! Low seat height and low center of gravity make it a great 50/50 bike!

The DR650 doesn't have the dohickey problem and never came in camoflage. Are you thinking of the Kawasaki KLR650? They are very similar, but the DR650 is a little smaller and lighter and has an air/oil cooled engine rather than the KLR's water -cooling. They are both dead simple to work on and mod. :)

@JaeTheobald
4 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is Tyler's brother. Like he said in the video, I rode it on the tour of southern Utah last fall and we went nearly 1000 miles. I also had a sheepskin cover on it, but my butt was never sore. Just to be more ergonomic, I did stand every now and then to stretch out. I am 5'7"-ish with a 30 inch inseam and I didn't have any issues with it being too tall. The DR650 does have two height adjustments on the bottom of the rear shock. I think this was still at the higher setting, but the Seat Concepts seat makes it easier to straddle. I also own a DR650 at home and I can say for certain that this one was WAAAAY better than mine. The suspension and overall handling (loaded and unloaded) really stood out. If I didn't already have one, I would 100% buy this one! it is a solid bike that could tour the world. Speaking of-- flights to Vegas are around $20. A shuttle to St. George is about the same. Fly out, pick it up and ride it home! Have an adventure!
