NOTE: The first Harry James direct-to-disc recording session for Sheffield Lab occurred in March 1976. The audio for the intended LP was recorded from a single stereo microphone directly feeding the master disc cutting amplifier, hence “direct to disc.” Neither of the sides recorded to the lacquer master disc at this session were able to be released on LP due to technical issues with the direct-to-disc process. However, Sheffield Lab also recorded the session to a two-track master tape in parallel that did not suffer the same technical issues as the master disc recording, and it is from this master tape, transferred directly to the digital compact disc master, that we get the audio for the alternate take of this tune. A subsequent Sheffield session in July 1976 resulted in the successful release of the LAB-3 direct-to-disc LP, so the July 1976 recording of the tune at the second session was the first to be released on LP, with the earlier March 1976 recording being labeled an “alternate take” and released later on CD in 1989 (and appearing in this video).
