you do NOT trim the brass to 53.5mm, that was for paper patched bullets, when using jacketed bullets, like the upgraded GP90/23 which was made for this 1889 model, you trim to 54.5mm (though you can get away with full length 55mm who cares works fine) Just do not over charge the brass.

The Springfield M1903 looks like it had some Swiss inspiration as far as the replaceable separate firing pin. Unlike the Mauser the firing pin assembly is one piece but stronger. I can see an advantage in using a separate assembly because it can be easily replaced and spares can be carried by the individual infantryman. Another problem back then was the thickness and hardness of the primers from the manufacturers. Military primers are usually hard by design because the military didn't want hair detonations. The Swiss Military had very strong influences on the M1903 rifle design from the firing pin to the bayonet design of the M1905 series.

The action is rated to a maximum operating pressure of 37,000 psi. So it will still take reasonably hot loads, you can lug lead upto 2200fps and it won't hurt it, just don't go over that pressure and the gun will be fine.

I use the 7.5 swiss case, first thing is to anneale the case then full length size, I bell the case mouth more than normal to seat the. 310 bullets then hen I use trial boss powder using Hornadays recipe, - 30% and a hard cast. 210gr, .310 diameter hardcast gascheck bullet. The bore diameter is. 308 but the groove depth brings it to. 310 the three groove rifling with wide lands makes it difficult to measure correctly. (I was using hard cast 200gr. 308 cast bullets at first and shot patterns instead of groups) I fabricated a taller front sight and have only been able to shoot at 65 yard's, but it's still able to group under .78 inches, I imagine on a perfect day it's capable of 1.5 at 100yrds. After the first firing of the case's I neck size only, I've only had a few that needed neck reaming, and bump the shoulder back to chamber correctly. It's a very fun piece of history to shoot.
@Toolness1
6 жыл бұрын
No need to trim the brass any differently for this when loading jacketed .308 bullets. The original GP90 ammo used a paper patched bullet measuring .321. These things have insanely large throats that taper down. I shoot the exact same cast loads in my K31, 1911, K11, and 96/11 as I do in my 1889. I do get some blowback in the 1889 but accuracy is fine, and I don't get the type of crimp you would normally see in a rifle if you used brass that had overly long necks. I could fix that blowback issue by using a larger diameter bullet and a longer OAL since I have to seat them quite deep to work in the K31. I have some loads worked up specifically to address that issue but haven't tested them yet.

I know these guys are trying but I a lot of the information is just false. This straight pull design is the same in the 1911 rifles just that the locking lugs are moved in the middle from the rear. This rifles shoots smokeless its just a light load. You can just 7.5x55 brass to reload these rifles and 7.5x55 will chamber so don't shoot 7.5x55. GP11 brass has berdan primer so I'd prefer PPU or Norma to reload. And so on. I love you guys but I had to correct that information

Yep, you're right. On most 1889's there's no need to trim the brass any differently. I have two and they both work fine with the same case length as I shoot in the modern rifles. I posted this on MAC's patreon but I shoot the exact same lead cast loads in all my swiss rifles. I have 2 1889's, a 96/11, a 1911, two K11's, and two K31's. .309 Lee cast bullet over 19gr 2400 in a Berdan primed GP11 case with Tula berdan primers. I don't trim the brass any differently, chambers and shoots just fine. Although I do have to seat them pretty deep to be compatible with the K31 since it has such a tight throat. I figured that large jump to the rifling in the 1889 would cause problems, but they shoot quite accurately. I do get some gas blowback though in the 1889, so I have loaded up some new loads with the same bullet seated at max OAL as well as larger diameter bullets seated out to kiss the rifling. Haven't tested them yet...
@That_NJ_guy

Toolness1 cool. I have a k00/11 and a beat up k31. My k00/11 is gem in my tiny collection. I even have a rare k11 bayonet for it (not matching). I want to get one of the long rifles it seems the 96/11 is favored. I'll see what happens in the future. I would like a 1889 but how things are in NJ and there unclear laws I don't know if a 10 magazine ban would effect the firearm since NJ doesn't really follow the federal system which is a shock.

Tim, can that m82 from the last video be converted to a standard rifle if someone wanted to? Also did you pick up one of the colt marine m45a1 1911s that were returned to colt because of finish problems last year? Saw your video years ago on your custom shop civilian model.
