Now days we don't transpose rails anymore, we'll just replace it with another used and certified rail with the same or close to the same head loss. There are electric switch heaters called Calrod, it's held along the web of the rails with clips and a black fiberglass cover fastened between the points and sometimes on the outside of the rails at the switch

I'm glad that you got a solar charger. Normally you should charge a power bank then charge your phone from that power bank, especially in low light, although you will find that it still charges ib cloudy weather. This guarantees that the supply of power is regulated. Also be gentle with the solar charger. The panels can be prone to damage. It is best to store it in its box rather than stuffing it into a pack, especially when very cold or hot.
@Peasmouldia

All correct there sir. Crucial thing with solar panels is to get it as close perpendicular to the sun as possible. Voltage drops off dramatically if the angle is greater or less than that. Thanks.

No problem with the quality shoestring. On those switches there should be metal filament lines that run along then. Switches by me have them and they glow orange in the winter to avoid freezing. They change the amount of electric going to them just like a stove-based on the weather to avoid snow and ice buildup. That signal light is now a rare one. You can tell that has been there for over 75 years.

My company ships a lot of Locomotive Air Compressors. They're DAMNED SERIOUS Compressors. They're two stage three cylinder with BIG ASSED 5 or 6 inch pistons for the first stage. I watched a REALLY COOL video about Locomotives made by a Mechanic for KCS. I'm a Diesel Mechanic myself but I had NO IDEA they NEVER change the oil on those power plants for the ENTIRE life of the Engine. They have something like 18 stages of filtration. I do know that oil doesn't break down it just becomes contaminated with particulates and carbon. When oil is recycled they put it in a HUGE storage tank and let it set for 10+ years and all the carbon and particles settle to the floor of the tank and they pump the clean oil out and reuse it and just leave the dirty part I'm the bottom of the tank. Kinda like siphoning "drip" gas out of a Crude Oil Storage Tank on a Oil Well Location. It's all about what level of the tank you pull from 🤔🤓

ATCS shows when the heater is on at a switch. On the display it show HTR to indicate that the heater is on. When the temperature is below freezing we see the heaters kick on automatically. When a route is set by the dispatch computer it sends the command bits from the BCP to the MCP ( each control point is an MCP ) and the HTR bit is set to on when he temp is below 32. It stays on till the train clears the route. When the dispatch computer sends commands immediately after the route clears for another route to be lined, you see the HTR on all day and night. The MCPs provide indication data every 60 seconds or every time the indication changes, but the BCP on sends data when the route is lined Looking at the BCP data from a 24 hour period you can see how many trains went through and in what direction. The Colonie Sub from Albany to Mechanicville NY would have 6 or 8 trains a day when I was monitoring it. 2 of those movements were always the nightly train to GE in Waterford. They need to get supplied every night and they have loaded boxcars to go to the silicone companies. They spend about 6 hours a night emptying the tankers and swapping out the full and empty boxcars. Not sure why they didn't just leave the tank cars for GE to empty on their own. That always puzzled me that they tied up a train crew for a whole shift.

Just discovered your channel, I love this kind of detail about how railroads work - thanks for making these vids! I was surprised to see how much some of the spikes had worked up out of the ties; a couple were even missing completely. Is that common? Does the railroad have any automated way of inspecting to find them, so they know where to send a crew to hammer them back in again?
@railnut8453

About the ground line... The rules say if a cut of cars have been off air for a certain period of time then the train or cut of cars have to be walked and inspected before they can be moved. Putting them on the the ground line saves the time of having to inspect them before they can be moved.

I see "Light rail" and jointed connections. You haven't mentioned manufactured "Dates" on the rail. Those badly worn rails flattened by use, that rollover steel can flip up as a train runs over it, It can flip up and hit a rider. There is a name for that and I have read old Hobo stories where they have been injured by those.

I just saw a new story that shippers cannot get any rail service from West coast ports Not in Oregon not in Washington state not in California All freight is having to move by truck and no one knows why this has been the case for the past several weeks Do you know why this is happening ? is there no rail traffic going from the West coast or are they shipping something else that's taking up all of the resources ? This is very strange and it's never been seen before so something out of the ordinary is occurring on the West coast
