I removed the self resonance killer contact and tossed it in the garbage and the tuner now works great!

Which is the self resonant killer? Thank you.

I agree with previous comment. Something is heating up at high power, prob a toroid balun/unun. If it's internal to the tuner then there's a problem with the tuner as it should be able to handle legal limit. Try to feel around to see what's getting hot to the touch.

If you are measuring with the meter set to peak, all you are doing is charging the meters capacitor, while checking your SWR, you should be reading average power mode only, the PK is for SSB.

What type of antenna are you using. It acts like a Bulun or more specifically the Toroid within is heating up and the permeability of the Toroid is changing.

sorry for the late response, I am using an ALL-BAND DELTA LOOP, total wire is about 550 ft, but its moot now, sent it back to MFJ for full refund and now using the MFJ-998 AUTO TUNER without issues, thanks for your question and or possible help, 73 DE KD6SBR (Tom in NV)

If the antenna has a balun, the balun may not be robust enough to handle the higher power and may be heating up.

I glanced at the AL 80B Manual, it doesn't appear that you are overdriving your amp. Is everything well grounded? I used an 811H and an MFJ 986 tuner. MFJ's cross needle meters can be a bit odd sometimes. It could be RF getting into the meter from another path. I'm not an MFJ basher at all, I've owned their equipment for decades. I switched to a Palstar tuner recently after my 986 did some arching. I fixed the tuner but I don't trust it on high power just yet. The power ratings are to be taken with a grain of salt. Can you put another directional watt meter in line after your tuner? Is there any possibility that you have the meter on peak power? Good luck, I know how disappointing having new equipment malfunction. When I got my 986 thirty some odd years ago it arrived with the turns counter belt off and the inductor was all out of line so the first thing I had to do was open it up. You really need to have all your equipment grounded to a bus bar and that grounded to a proper earth ground it may very well fix the problem. 73! N5WRW
