I've had the older style LCE shifter in my truck for quite a few years. It was second hand; I got it off a fellow CustomTacos member (Brian Santo Thomas) who switched to the URD short shifter. At the time, I preferred this model because it replaced the shift lever for a shiny new one. When I first got it, it was fine- just noisy. Since it is a 1 piece shifter, it transmits transmission noises into the cab and it basically sounds like you have a sequential. Well, as I've gotten older, a noisy interior is not as welcome as it once was. I want a little comfort with my fast.
So... long story short, I ordered a URD shifter which adds a spacer plate and an extension adapter to the factory, 2 piece shifter. The inner piece attaches to the trans and is isolated from the outer piece by rubber. As a result, my interior is WAAAYYYY quieter when I drive. No more ringing ears!!! Also, the URD spacer plate is thicker, so the fulcrum point is set further up. This lowers the shift throw even more than the previous unit did. I now have borderline S2000 shift throw and man does it feel good! The other fringe benefit is that the stock shifter is longer than the LCE and sits the knob further from the radio. Combine that with the thick spacer and the shifter now sits much closer to the steering wheel; 5 inches away more or less. Needless to say, it is now a much more fun vehicle to drive :)
I noticed that LCE has since moved to a similar design, good for them! It is a much better route to take. I used Dorman bushings from my local auto parts, but also ordered some new ones from Marlin Crawler. Once those arrive, this shifter will be even better as the Marlin shift seat bushing is Delrin instead of the squishy rubber.
