Silk Reeling can be practiced before you start a routine. When you are comfortable with silk reeling, the routine study becomes easy. We also use silk reeling as a warm up exercise every class.

Shifu Jesse Tsao is an excellent instructor in his videos and I wish I had started Chen Style 20 years earlier.. Silk reeling is helpful for all “soft style” martial arts as it helps with “coiling power” and if like myself you were seeking knowledge in TCM then Shifu is an amazing teacher in all his videos. For myself I have no instructors physically close to me but wish I could travel to California to learn. Words cannot do justice to Shifu’s books and videos

I train under temananui. He teaches Tai Chi, Bagua, Xingyi, and Liu He Ba Fa, and he teaches them very, very well. You can gain incredible chi just off silk reeling, the same way you can gain incredible chi from doing the bagua single palm change for seven years straight. It all comes down to how each Sifu teaches his style.

Best advice may be "just do it". Find a local class, talk to some of the students. See how long they have been with the instructor. Stay for a class, if you can. Are people enjoying it. Does the instructor gently correct mistakes? These are probably good signs. I love going to my Tai Chi class (18 months now) The class is close - so I go often, The class is enjoyable - so I go often. Instructor is dedicated patient and helpful. I feel the benefits. DVDs are good. I own many, but class is better

temananui, yes. and also, these movements are for much more than warm up. They connect your motion with neikung if done right - producing abnormal power.

@andreanws It seems to the principles of the movements in Tai Chi. The fighting moves in Tai Chi are basically application of these movement principles.

That's beautiful work. Question - at what point in Chen style training should a person begin Silk Reeling, and how much of his/her training should he devote to it (vs form practice or some of your other programs?)

What is the purpose of reeling, if I may ask? I practice Taiji Quan Yang style from the school of Cheng Dsu Yao.

Scott Grubisich sums up chan si jin in this way: " Silk reeling [chan si] is the kinetic chain that is the end product of 1) a relaxed and upright body, 2) the coordination of waist turning, weight shifting, and chest/abdomen opening/closing, and 3) movement initiated from the core. "

@KendallChiq If you can't learn how to do brain surgery from watching DVDS You can not understand how to do Tai Chi with out a teacher.
