Taiping has a long-standing history of coffee cultivation and production. The town was one of the earliest coffee-growing regions in Malaysia, dating back to the late 19th century. Coffee plantations and mills played a significant role in Taiping's economic development during that time.
The Antong traditional coffee mill in Taiping, Malaysia is believed to be the oldest of such set-up in the country and has been using the same methods to produce its popular coffee for almost nine decades.
The coffee factory looked just like 50 or 90 years ago which was built by Mr. Tiah Ee Mooi, the founder in 1933 with a small wooden building with a zinc roof.
It houses machines for roasting coffee, removing the husk from beans, and mixing them up with sugar. The main facility is the giant concrete stove to burn the firewood for roasting the coffee beans in order to preserve its original taste and aroma.
After the beans are mixed with sugar, they are dried and crushed into a coarse powder before being packaged and sold to restaurants and other customers.
The mill operates out of the former home of Chen Cuifen, the mistress of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the revolutionary leader who ushered China into its brief period of democracy in the early 1900s.
When Chen moved back to China, she then sold the property to the An Tong Coffee Mill founder. The house has many collection of artifacts dating back to its coffee-making history, as well as objects and information about the life of Chen Cuifen which makes this place a historical landmark.
