Due to the ongoing political tensions between the capitalist Republic of China in Taiwan, and the communist People's Republic of China on the mainland, during the 1970s, 80s and 90s, foreign flag carriers operating to both nations required to create subsidiary firms which eschewed as many references to their own states as possible, as neither Taipei or Beijing recognised each other's sovereignty, the result being the formation of 7 shadow airlines working under the auspices of international carriers such as British Airways, Air France, KLM, Swissair and more.
