What is it?
A Talking Tile is a single-message speech-generating device for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). It allows the user to communicate by playing a single recorded message of up to eighty seconds long, by simply pressing the tile down. The message could be a word, phrase, sound effect or a repeated line from a story or song for a user to play back at the right time.
How does it work?
Talking Tiles often come in a set of six different colours, with the potential for creating games based on sequencing, odd one out or memory. Alternatively, the tiles could be programed as a collection of sounds on the same theme e.g. farm animals, or as a series of repeated lines in a story. There is the option to slide a printed picture or symbol underneath each clear plastic cover to help reinforce the message/sound that will play when the device is activated.
How could it be used to support SEND?
This device could be used to support an early understanding of cause and effect (i.e. when a tile is pressed, something happens) or as a simple introduction to sound recording technology. Talking Tiles can support anyone learning to recognise the link between words and pictures.
Where can I get one?
The Talking Tiles can be borrowed as a set of six from West Sussex Library Service: www.westsussex....
Please note: each Talking Tile requires 3 x AAA batteries (i.e. 18 for the full set).
