The #Isaka-Mwanza section of the Tanzanian Standard Gauge Railway (#SGR) is a key component of Tanzania's infrastructure development plan, with a length of 341 kilometers from #Isaka to #Mwanza. As of November 2023, the construction progress is over 44%, and the project is scheduled to be operational by 2024. Costing approximately $1.321 billion, the construction is undertaken by Chinese companies, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (#CCECC) and #China #Railway Construction Company (#CRCC).
The SGR is anticipated to bring substantial economic benefits to Tanzania by enhancing regional trade, creating employment opportunities, and improving connectivity with neighboring countries like #Rwanda, #Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of #Congo. The technical specifications include 249 kilometers of mainline track and 92 kilometers of passing loops, enabling trains to travel at speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour.
Several factors contribute to the prioritization of the Isaka-Mwanza section over other phases of the SGR. Mwanza's strategic location as a transport hub connecting Tanzania to neighboring countries, its rich mineral resources, and access to #LakeVictoria make it an ideal candidate for promoting economic activity and trade. The existing infrastructure and industrial potential in the region, coupled with political considerations, especially the connection to former President John #Magufuli's home region Geita, have influenced the decision.
Construction progress highlights include the completion of over 150 kilometers of track laying, ongoing construction of 18 stations with seven already completed, and the establishment of 37 bridges and 1,234 culverts. Despite challenges posed by the rainy season, the project is progressing steadily, and authorities express satisfaction with the pace and quality of work.
The completion of the #Mwanza-Isaka SGR is expected to boost the Tanzanian economy by opening the central corridor, connecting Lake District regions to neighboring countries. This project is anticipated to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, enhance transportation efficiency, reduce road reliance, and promote tourism, making it a significant contributor to Tanzania's overall development. The government has affirmed its commitment to ensuring timely project completion and has set expectations for the contractor to officially hand over the completed project in 2024.
