The thing I love so much about Exile is it's the classic "my girl left me with no warning and moved on to some new guy and it hurts so much" song that I feel like we've heard a million times, but this time you get to hear the girl's side of it on the same relationship. And hear that where he sings about helplessness ("I COULDN'T turn things around") and not knowing anything was wrong ("you never gave a warning sign"), she's singing about his unwillingness to change ("you NEVER turned things around") and not being listened to ("I gave so many signs"). Also his perspective like she's doing something wrong by moving on and finding happiness with someone new, while her perspective is that his continued possessiveness "adds insult to injury." I love it so much, and their voices mingle and contrast SO beautifully!

Peace is definitely my favorite on this album, like ‘all these people think love is show but I will die for you in secret’ is so powerful lyric. In long pond studio, she relate this song to her fame and she was addressing her boyfriend like ‘would be enough if I can never give you peace’ and then in midnights ‘sweet nothings’ is kinda a reply to this song like ‘all I wanted from you is sweet nothings’

Swifties have a joke that Taylor is her own genre, because she blends a lot of them. When she started as a country singer, she had the storytelling that's so typical of the genre, but a lot of pop sensibilities that attracted fans who don't typically listen to country. In Speak Now and Red, which were billed as country albums, you can find pop, rock, and even dubstep on one song lol. 1989 was her first "pure pop" record, but, as with all her work, she retained the evocative lyrics and storytelling of her country roots. Reputation is still pop, but definitely hip-hop-influenced, with some EDM and even gospel aspects. Lover is her second most purely pop album, but it still has rock, punk, R&B, and country sounds on it. Folklore isn't really folk music, though it definitely has some influences, especially in the storytelling! It's more indie-rock/indie-pop. Her folkiest song on the album is Betty, lol. And finally Evermore is very similar in genre to folklore, though ironically its song Ivy is the truest to a folk song between the two records (very different from Betty, just so I don't give you the wrong idea!). Evermore has a wider range of styles, with songs that can be more clearly defined by one genre, including country and pop. It's a more experimental, eclectic mix of songs, and I actually love it just a little bit more than Folklore, so I'm super excited to see your reaction to it! By the way, if you want to check more pure folk out, two of my favorites are The Times They A-Changin' by Bob Dylan (one of the best songwriters in history - his voice is an acquired taste though lol), and Who Knows Where the Time Goes by Fairport Convention. And for a traditional folk song (as in, actually passed down over generations in the way folk stories are, typically with ambiguous origins) I enjoy Fairport Convention's rendition of Matty Groves, but it's very different than most modern music haha

Ok but give Betty 1 more chance. Cardigan, August and Betty are VERY connected, she wrote them from the perspective of each person involved in a teenage love triangle and they're actually genius for that, I didn't catch it my first listen either but Betty has awesome references to both the previous songs

The 1 and Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve parallel is pretty good. And yes, Taylor does have songs that explores different perspectives. She does a lot of call backs and flash forwards to lyrics and stories that she has touched on before. You will find a lot of connections to Midnights since working on her re-records has brought up a lot of feelings from years ago; the sounds of Midnights feel like a culmination of all her past eras too. This album has been dubbed her best (one of my favs too) because of all the stories which is what her storytelling is all about and because many are made up stories that she came up with and all the connections and storyline throughout the album. Another point to consider, if you go back through her catalog, she does have a lot of heartbreak and break up songs, but if you understand the context of My Tears Ricochet, then you’ll know that there are other songs that talk about relationships but don’t necessarily mean what you see on surface level. Love that you enjoyed the album. It’s a great piece of art!

Ok. So as an adult male it’s great to see other adult men really get in Taylor swift. Folklore really got me into Taylor during quarantine then I started watching all the reactions then my ocd accounting mind took over and started watching the specials and interviews she gave from the beginning of her career and her documentary. I have since purchased most of her music and. Now tickets to her concert and frankly I can’t wait. My nine year old son always wants to drive with daddy instead of moms car because dad has tay tay playing and he can sing all the songs from reputation 1989 and lover. So yes when you admit to yourself your a swiftie you may call her tay tay. There is so much you will want to learn about her to have a deeper understanding of her music and her as person. I recommend reputation and the all to well 10 minute version. Listen to the song before you watch the short film. Btw Taylor is the genre.

I'm so glad you liked Seven as much as you did - it's one of my favorites as well! I love how it is from the perspective of someone looking back on their childhood and remembering one specific friend from that time. This is a great song for relistens. For example, i think the bit about "I think your house is haunted, your dad is always mad and that must be why" is the innocent and naive thoughts she had as a child when witnessing her friends dad being abusive. That makes the following "I think you should come live with me and we can be pirates and you won't have to cry" especially heartbreaking. As always, I so appreciate the attention you give to the lyrics and how much thought you put into interpretations. Well done!!

This album is everything. I love across musical genres, but reside mostly in rock & indie. I found Taylor way back when she was starting on MySpace & loved her, but didn’t connect with her, probably because I’m a bunch of years older & she’s the same age as my brother, but talent was undeniable. I loved 1989. Reputation slipped by me because of life upheavals. I bought a bunch of copies of Lover bc I was pissed what her old label pulled & there was no way I’d not support. But I remember seeing the artwork for folklore right before she dropped it & I *knew* this was mine. My first listen at midnight even had a wild thunderstorm outside. I will never get over this one. Ever. It brings me so much joy seeing others connect to it too. & Evermore as well. Music is the best gift ever. It just is.

The last great American dynasty is written about Rebekah Harkness who married into the family that started Standard Oil. She was a divorcee and people were very judgmental of her. She sings about the house they bought in Rhode Island and threw many parties there. Later taylor swift bought that same house and when she was in the height of celebrity fame and public criticisms she threw big parties there as well. It took me a few listens and a google so no worries for not catching it but it’s become one of my favorite songs because it’s just so visual

this album has a few genres attached to it but I would categorize it as Indie Folk & Alternative Rock. The main theme though is songs focused solely on storytelling and not too concerned with rhyming and catchy beats like you need in Pop songs. That's why I've always loved folk so much because its HEAVY on storytelling and the instrumental sets the tone for the story being told.

I've been a T Swift fan since the beginning,I've had Folklore on repeat since it came out, and I literally tattooed lyrics on my body because I love it so much (this is me trying/at least i'm trying). But I didn't consider the phrasing on Cardigan the way you pointed out. "When you are young they assume you know nothing...But I knew you" 😮 For whatever reason, I was just thinking of the chorus as such a separate thing unto itself and then just considering Cardigan in it's place within the love triangle with August and Betty, but your commentary is hitting me so hard right now.

18:38 about "exile" and the "you never learned to read my mind" line, I think is 90% effort. I think everyone felt that with someone in their lives, like you know you don't have to say it; for me it was my best friend in school, we just looked at each other and already knew what we would say... that comes when you actually put a lot of effort to know the other person and spend so much time with them you start to "predict" what they would say or how they would react or feel over something. Taylor's character in this song is saying: after all this time in the relationship, you still don't understand how my mind works, and the blame is on you for not wanting to or not putting the effort.

This was beautiful watching you experience this. It’s a beautiful album. If you like this you might enjoy a band called Eisley. Their early stuff kind of reminds me of this album. Whimsical and nostalgic.

Love the reaction. Both albums are more stories than personal. On evermore there's probably only about three personal songs

I saw you’re a filmmaker! You should react to all too well 10 minute short film. It’s amazing and Taylor directed it. It’s one of my favorite songs by her and I’m sure it’s most swifties too. Beautiful writing!

I know you said you would react to Evermore, and Taylor has a song with Bon Iver on that, but she also featured on a track for his band Big Red Machine (whose member Aaron Dessner produced& cowrote some of the songs on both Folklore & Evermore) its a great song called Renegade. I just came accross your channel today & your lyric breakdown was so good you got an instant subscription from me😁.

You are going to find every album era is different. Evermore album is the sister album of Folklore. You should react to her documentary Miss Americana if you want more background of Taylor.

Definitely interesting that you thought this was a more personal album! Midnights was a concept album about midnights throughout her life, while this album is much more about storytelling and not necessarily about Taylor herself. Just shows how good a storyteller she is that you connected to it!

This album won album of the year at the 2021 Grammys. Rightfully so. You wondered if you were thinking too deeply into the lyrics? Can't do it. Too deeply doesn't exist with Taylor. Many of her songs are multi-layered lyrically. And many subtly reference prior works, which makes it difficult for the casual listener to understand. "Why did she phrase it that way?" "That didn't make much sense." Well, if you knew her prior stories and discography, it becomes clear. That's how the little genius hooks you. You want to make sense of things. You want to find out more. It's a rabbit hole that's easy to fall into... hard to climb out of. But very pleasant while you're there.

Taylor and bon iver have four songs together total! Exile from folklore obvi + evermore from evermore are the two from her albums. Bon Iver is also part of another band called big red machine with Aaron Dessner, who produced quite a bit of this album. Taylor has two features on the big red machine album called how long do you think it’s gonna last- renegade and birch. Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) Is the one singing with her on those two tracks!!

Nice. Another person appreciating Taylor and her craft. Dude, wait til you see her do the live performances, her showing the viewers a behind the scenes look into recording her Reputation album and so forth. So many good stuff from Taylor. You'll appreciate her even more as an artist. You understand why she is in her own lane. This album Folklore, has a live performance on Disney+ called the Long Pond Studio Sessions. If you're curious to know what she sounds like live and raw with her guitar, then you need to watch this. Most of her live performances has her go all out with the costumes and set designs. If that also peeks your interest, check out her 1989 and Reputation tours. Insanity. Again, it gives you an understanding why people will flock to go get tickets to see her live. If you do react to Folklore Long Pond Studio Sessions, you can then go ahead and listen to Evermore and work your way backwards into her discography. It's banger after banger dude. Just looking back at her debut album, she was 16 when it was released in October 2006 and then turned 17 a few months later on December 13 (her favorite number btw), you see that even for someone as young as her then she put out a nice solid album. Taylor has said she never wants to make the same album twice and wants to make albums that everyone can listen to and relate to it. Taylor will get you in those FEELS and bring you back to some experience you had. A moment that meant something to you. And you my friend, got a taste of it and now you asking for more from her. You can say to that, thank you Taylor Swift ❤

You should listen to Disney+ Long Pond Studios Folklore album. Taylor speaks about the background for each song and then performs them live.
