Valery Gergiev, I believe to be one of the top conductors of our times if not the best. However, I heard that his is begin censored because of his support of Putin and Soviet era imperialism. Although, if those re his his personal ideas and I disagree with his views, art is art and should be kept out of politics. Tchaikovsky's 5th under his direction is masterful!

Wonderful performance of a piece I have listened to for 55 years! Previously I enjoyed Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic's version. Here the Russians excel at playing their own music. The primary melody of the second movement, played first by the solo horn at 18:50, is so heartfelt and poignant and played at just the right tempo. Bravissimo Mr. Gergiev!
@FabGreg

I fully agree. It is really "Andante cantabile, con alcuna licenza", even if most probably slower than the composer tempo. But so cantabile, so poignant... Early in the covid related streaming season, the Mariinsky KZitem channel broadcasted a more recent recording. Better sound, and in my souvenir, an even better second mouvement. Possibly will be broadcast one more time.

More and more, I am impressed by the capability of Gergiev to reveal great music by a slower tempo. As the final duet of act III in Boris Godunov, the Lensky-Olga duet of act I in Oneguine. Suddenly, I am amazed discovering unsuspected great music. Hats off.

@@FabGreg Gergiev owns this piece. There are several good interpretations with Mariinsky (and who knows how many times he played this without being recorded), his recording with the Vienna Philharmonic from the late 90s is amazing - my favorite cd of Tchaikovsky's 5th. I was lucky to see Gergiev and the Vienna Phil play this at Carnegie Hall in 2000s, and it was a fantastic experience. Every time he plays the 5th it might be different, but it's always great.

Allegro : I. Murmures, doutes, plaintes, reproches à… II.

Russian composer, Russian orchestra, Russian conductor. Wonderful performance. There is some woodwind muddiness here and there caused by a microphone location issue, as when the winds are featured, the playing is excellent. Initially, I thought the horn solo in the 2nd movement was a bit slow, but as I listened, it struck me that this is the right tempo, as Tchaikovsky probably intended. It sounds so right. Also, the horn's timber is so warm and pure, so unlike many double horns today that verge on sounding like trombones as they move up the horn's range. In the 4th movement at 44:18, notice the double bass, or should I say bass viol in this case? I've never noticed a 5-string double bass before. Is this a historical instrument? The player with this instrument is ont the right in the 1st row of basses. All the other basses appear to be the standard 4-string basses. What a treat! It would be nice to hear it by itself to see if the timber is different from the usual 4-string bass. Maestro Gergiev always gives a very intense performance. I have to say that the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra is definitely up to music and the conductor. Again, excellent performance.

Dear Maestro Gergiev, It is very regrettable that some of Your Colleagues have censured Your right to hold an opinion. May beauty one day, triumph over tyranny. Psalms 146:3-6; 72:6-8.

When i was growing up in the late 80's I first heard this symphony on an old decca recording, with the then New Philharmonia, under Leopold Stokowski, the horn solo was wonderfully performed by Alan Civil. This performance is just as great.

Admiro a Mravinsky, Roszhdestvensky y Kondrashin

If the Russian regime would be half as good as Russian music, Russia would be a fantastic country.

When people write comments like this… I feel sorry for them. Deeply and profoundly. Because it shows how thoroughly their brains have been washed and rinsed by their country’s leading media companies highjacked by the global neoliberals. Not to get into any political discussions inappropriate here, I’d only say this…. The only nation that ever birthed such geniuses of a human condition as Tchaikovsky or Dostoevsky is Russia. Don’t you for a second - at least a split second - come to wonder that perhaps everything you hear might be untrue and you’re doing yourself a disservice by buying into the globalists’ narrative?.. again, deeply sorry.

My friend, the Russian regime is better than you can imagine. Come visit, I will show you our life, but remember, Russia is so big that one human life is not enough to visit the most interesting places. And in order to understand the Russian soul, three generations are not enough. And to understand this music, you need to understand the Russian soul. Welcome!
