Son of Frankenstein is my (as well as the late Robert Osborne’s) all-time favorite Frankenstein film for many reasons: Basil Rathbone’s performance as Henry and Elizabeth’s son Wolf Frankenstein beats his performance as Sir Guy of Gisborne in The Adventures of Robin Hood as well as his long-run of playing Sherlock Holmes After stellar performances in both Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein, Boris Karloff was exceptional in his final on-screen performance as Frankenstein’s Monster; he should’ve been nominated for (if not win) the 1939 Academy Award for Best Actor Béla Lugosi was awesome as Ygor, his best performance since Dracula; he should’ve been nominated for (if not win) the 1939 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor This film marked Lionel Atwill’s first of six appearances in the Universal Monsters franchise My all-time favorite Karloff-Lugosi film from the 8 they made together; in a twist of irony and fate, after playing second fiddle to him in their other films, Lugosi somewhat got his revenge on Karloff because Ygor controlled the Monster with an iron fist Frank Skinner’s was marvelous (as was his score for Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein in 1948)
