The lyrists for this song, Paul Williams, said this song was the complete opposite of what was popular at the time, rock n' roll. He'd hoped that someone would at least put it on the B side of their album. And he goes on, "Then an Angel sang it and changed my life forever."

The "Close To You" album by the Carpenters is the very first music recording I ever purchased back in 1970, and "We've Only Just Begun" was the first track on the album. I was also fortunate to see the Carpenters in concert at Arnold Hall at the United States Air Force Academy in 1976 when I was a cadet there. The Carpenters remain one of my favorite groups, and the late, great Ms. Karen Carpenter is in a class all to her own.

This video is from 1970 on the "Make Your Own Kind of Music" TV Show. Karen typically was playing the drums as she was singing "live" for their concerts in the early years. She was an excellent drummer along with that incredible singing voice. Thank you for reacting to this song and the Carpenters.

The amazing contribution of Richard Carpenter should not be ignored. He is a musical genius and I believe there are three living people who are genius arrangers - Richard Carpenter, Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), and Benny Anderson from ABBA.

The video was released in 1985, but as others here have noted, the studio recording (which is the source for the audio here) is from 1970. The video was originally from the summer TV series, "Make Your Own Kind of Music," which aired on NBC-TV from July to September 1971 and featured the Carpenters among other regular performers (though the Carpenters being about the hottest pop artists around at the time were clearly the headliners). The use of the scrolling sheet music in the beginning covers the opening of the song as it aired on TV, with Richard appearing to thank the TV audience for tuning into the series. The "YOU" in this case was the audience, and that word on the set also demonstrates a gimmick used throughout the series, where the performers worked through the alphabet, using words linked to each letter, to introduce each segment. This was the final song on the last episode, which aired on September 7, 1971. "We've Only Just Begun" had been a major hit single the previous year, as a follow-up to the Carpenters' breakthrough hit, "(They Long to Be) Close to You." The "Close to You" single had spent four weeks at #1. "We've Only Just Begun," released while CTY was still on the pop charts, sailed up the charts to #2, where it stayed for four weeks in the fall of 1970. Both songs have become signature songs for the Carpenters, widely recognized and associated with the duo. Both singles have also been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for recordings of "lasting quality or historical significance."

Hi Chase, it was from 1970 and on their second album Close To You. The “YOU” set was used in three videos; this one, Close To You and Baby It’s You. This song was from a bank commercial Richard saw on TV and traced it to the writer Paul Williams. The rest is Carpenters history. You can take a day off, any follower is going to want you healthy and rested. If you want to keep up every day, but you shouldn’t need to, do a few extra in “the can” and schedule them for release when you’re busy. As for your next foray in to Carpenters rabbit hole. How about a live performance from 1970. It has Karen doing all the things she can do. It’s the Bacharach/David Medley and it is amazing. Be seated or you’re going to fall over. Her voice is, indeed, Wow. Beautiful 🎶 I believe it is a "live" performance on the Ed Sullivan Show but most likely lipsynched to the studio version of the song many "live" performances on TV were in that time. They are backed by flutes etc. and most of the backing vocals of most of the Carpenter's songs were Karen and Richard themselves.

Good reaction. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. Perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with haunting emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, recorded more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. KC was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney who said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. Her angelic songs include, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Rainy Days And Mondays, Close To You, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Superstar, A Song For You, etc. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia

In 1979, when I "graduated" from elementary school into Jr. High School, our class was taught this song, and we sang it at an assembly celebrating our "moving on" to a higher level of schooling. I will always remember this song as being my first "on stage performance", taking place at the end of 6th grade. It will always have that special meaning for me in that regard. From 8th grade through 12th grade, I got into chorus in school, and refined my voice quite a bit. When I went to college, the music classes I signed up for were cancelled due to lack of interest. But it was that 6th grade performance that sparked my interest in music as a performance art.

A&M, their label, had such a hard time trying to figure out how to market them. They hit in 1970, just as heavier rock was becoming huge and here's this brother and sister duo. Richard was a child prodigy at the piano while Karen tried various instruments until she finally settled on the drums. They started out with another person as a jazz trio. It wasn't until A&M signed them and Karen sang that they found their direction. Richard did all the arranging and producing. I think a lot of Karen's issues stemmed from the fact that their mother doted on Richard as the "talent" and as they became bigger audiences wanted to see more of Karen, so they had to push her out front instead of just singing behind her drums. Between her mother urgng her to diet and her seeing a review referring to her as "chubby" you can get the general idea.

I think it’s nuts that to a lot of people the Carpenters were their guilty pleasure. I was never cool so I loved them from Day 1. I guess those others hadn’t heard that John Lennon was a big fan of her voice and told her so when they met. And who wasn’t cooler than John Lennon from the Beatles? P.S. Karen is sublime but Richard was the genius behind their sound. Sure she would have stood out anywhere but his arrangements and musicality enhanced her and together they made a lasting legacy of beauty.
