Personality wise, it sounds like tegus are closer to dogs and monitors are closer to cats.

Everyone here's something I found out from researching Tegus are not just social with humans, they're also social with their own species. They hunt together, brumate together, and dig burrows together. Its amazing. Plus tegus are social enough to have two tegus in the same enclosure without any incidents. It's amazing.

Here's something I wonder: How do tegus and monitors not get tired of flicking their tounge in and out?
@MrDagon007

Probably the same reason why your tongue is not tired after hours of talking: it is an oversized muscle.

The best large monitor lizard is the black throat. They're basically over sized ackie monitors. Also, white throats and peach throats are sub species of black throats. The difference is the color of their throats and sizes.

Twix are better than KitKats. I prefer dwarf monitors because tegus are expensive to feed and they need a massive enclosure which is expensive. But I still love Tegus.

Okay, I think there is some false information in the interaction part of this video. Social interaction with monitor lizards is highly crucial if you want to get any type of monitor. Take the black throat monitor for example. IF SOME HOW YOU WANT ONE AS A PET, and you don't interact with it, it WILL send you to the hospital, no question about it. The same goes for a small, dinky yet genius Ackie Monitor, Interacting with this animal 3-5 times a week is a must or else you won't have a fun time raising him. Not interacting with any monitor lizard YOU HAVE AS A PET for a while, then all of a sudden attempting to, oh boy, good fricking luck.

I think you might be a bit confused. Socialization and social interaction can be very different, as in this context, the former is having the lizard get used to you and humans without immediately jumping to the conclusion you're a threat. The other is interacting with each other because you both want to in some capacity. I'm sure in some way that sounds kind of stupid, but I highly doubt he got his Monitors and Tegus to be comfortable with him by doing nothing.

@@lasagnakob9908 i was using those terms kinda interchangeably, i’ll remember not to do that next time, for socialization, i meant that socialization with your monitor is imperative if it’s any size but large ones are dangerous. getting it used to your presence and having him understand that you are not a threat to him but actually a great source of enrichment will lead to a happy life with your monitor!

Also, DO NOT EVER SAY A TEGU IS MORE INTERACTIVE THAN A MONITOR. While Tegus are VERY intelligent, any monitor species is 10X smarter, no questions asked.
