Oh wow, those things have a real name! Here in the US we call them the hillbilly tooth twanger!! But the name is more to make fun of hillbillies then to describe the instrument. I know absolutely nothing about these things historically. Are they called Jew harps because they are a Jewish invention?

No, in English they have a shit ton of name. Jaw harp, jew harp, mouth harp, gewgaw... In french it's only guimbarde. It's one of the most ancient instrument of the world, it can be found across almost all the planet in different shapes and even in wood more or less in the Asian and Oceania world.
