This is a higher end radio, albeit from the early 2000’s. It impacted the development of the current rigs with concepts like multiple roofing filters and EQ boost. Nice find, congratulations!

Back in the eighties I ran up DX-CC over a long week end, barefoot into a Butternut vertical (the Minnesota mosquito) high mounted and a ground plane configuration. That was on the original Delta. There were times back then when 10M was open 24/7. Start working Europe and South America in the morning, move East and that night in the far East and Oceania. You could be on a first name basis with operators all over the world. And yes, one way DX and long delayed signals are very real. Sometimes if I woke up in the middle of the night I'd check 10M. At 3AM the band was jumping. Those were the days.

Nice demo of a radio I knew nothing about. Personally, the high distortion of DSP isnt something I like on any radio, but at least it is easily adjustable. Even 2.7 Kc is quite a wide ssb filter... 2.4 seems a happy medium... between noise and fidelity. I wonder what these cost used in 2022 ? Be mighty nice to have.

What is the antenna and height? I really like my TT O2. Took some learning compared to my Yaesu FT-2000 but it I really enjoy it.

It tends to make the radio pretty deaf if not done intelligently... it makes sense to reduce excess gain to a pre-set level which still allows most weak signals to be heard.. and then use the volume.

I see these for sale used in the $1,100 range. That seems high for a 20-year-old radio. Is that nostalgia pricing, or are they still $1,100 worth of radio?

i have heard a guy who was transmitting with a tentec orion in SSB, he had a very soft & clear modulation, easy to listen to, pleasent. so i think those are very good radios. i assume the tentec orion 2 would sound same as the tentec orion, the earlier tentec orion does not has a colorscreen, the orion 2 looks much nicer for that matter, that colorscreen. why did tentect even stop making these ??? these are tentecs best, the orion 2, they should have kept making that just like that. if you look into the sherwood list, the tentec orion 2 has a dynamic range of 95dB, that is very good already, amongst the best. 26:31 not bad but i think the noise reduction in the icom ic-7300 is better, it doesnt make that watery sounding digital artifact. maybe a lower level than that level 7 would make a bit less of that watery sound, the noise will be a bit higher but that is i think better than having that watery sound. good radio but i think the icom ic-7300 is better for that matter, it has i think a more effective noise reduction and noise blanker, the 7300 sounds very good too.

Thanks for this video. I have a chance to trade a brand new Yaesu 3000 for this radio with all the filters and a TenTec Chrome mic and keyer. What are your thoughts on that since you’ve had a 3000 as well?

If you’d ever be interested in a trade for a 3000 let me know. This rig isn’t even a couple of weeks old yet abs still has its warranty! I’ve worked from Oregon with it to Brazil, south Australia and Japan on voice. This Yaesu is amazing my friend! Larry K7HN

Hey Hans, i’m looking at maybe selling my nearly new Yaesu FTDX 3000 for an Orion 2. My main goal is for DX work. With this be a good radio to get versus the 3000. I’ve had excellent DX really with the 3000 but would like to get farther DX if I can.

The 3000 was no slouch when it came to DX and CW work. Put that up against the TT O2 and there really isn't a comparison on week signal work or a crowded CW contest!

Yes, I still own the Orion II and I love it. Probably the best sounding audio of any radio I have owned since 1994!
