Nice comparison. I try to inform anyone that bothers to listen not to buy simply based on the Sherwood list. Sherwood himself warns you not to. The list is built using a two signal test, one weak, one strong. In the real world the rig is subjected to many signals during a crowded band condition, not just two. Real world dynamic range is affected by all the signals, especially if the rig is an SDR sampling a large window. I have pitted my IC-7610 against my old FT-2000 during a CW contest and realized similar results as seen here. Lots of wood pecker heard on the 7610 and almost none on the 2000. Yet, the 2000 is way down on the Sherwood list and the 7610 near the top. The list about killed Elecraft when the K4 results were published. The Orion clearly beats the FT-101 to my ears.

Excellent++ video. Sherwood numbers have Orion way down in the list from Ftdx101, at or below IC7300. I'd take Orion into the contest before many of the radios above it on the list.

Nobody talks about the white noise of the other radios. Ten Tec Orion 1 and the Omni7 and the Jupiter were easy to listen to. Not all that hissing white noise blending with everything. The Ten Eagle was even quieter.

Rob's measurements show Yaesu's dynamic range 110dB, while Orion's is "just" 95dB. And yet it appears as Orion cuts off that QRM better (KT5C?).

I matched the tones of each rig. Rigs will readout a little different freq from rig to rig. Matching the exact audio tone lined them up the same, regardless of what the read out says.

I have the FTDX-101D (not the MP). I also have the Orion II. Oddly, I find myself using the Orion II more than the FTDX-101D due to the fact that it's so much easier to clean up a signal on the Orion II. My boy (KF0FYD) has an Omni VII, and the DSP on that rig is even better than on the Orion II. It's really too bad that Ten Tec lost the ability to compete in the market.

@@Team-fabulousI have a very late model Omni 6+ in mint condition maxed out with filters and the smd mods. What a nice radio, has the matching PS/speaker and desk Mike with the high power antenna matching unit. But I wanted an ftdx10 but am not sure I want to give up the Omni. This is a late model and the buttons are very flat and you have to be precise when pushing them. Kj4pom Mike

Just happened to have a DX10 on my hands these days, exactly the same thing, I call it the the woodpecker effect, the same applies to the Icom radios, from the old 756 till the 7850, it becomes noticeable above a certain signal strength, let say around an S9, it would be interesting to figure out the root cause of it? DSP section? p.s, this effect was not present on the Icom 775 that I had for quite awhile 73, I4LEC

Great comparison. One suggestion---at least part of the time, try to linger a bit longer on one radio or another--I know you were switching quickly to show the difference during a single transmission, but it was difficult to follow which was which some of the time, particularly at the beginning, even watching your hand on the switch (an overlay telling which radio was in use at any given time would help, but I know that is more editing work lol). But this was otherwise a fantastic comparison and really shows the capabilities of strong signal handling of both radios in **real world** conditions, which trumps the specs on paper any day of the week! Thanks and 73s!

@@Team-fabulous There is an upgrade for the sub receiver, but not the primary. The upgrade option basically makes the sub receiver the same as the primary one. (Also you lose general coverage on the sub receiver.)
