Man this video legit saved me this week. Had a stud break rotating the tires. The stud actually got pushed out with the nut attached so I had to drill baby drill. Way to turn a 15 minute task into a 24hr ordeal. I went with the Dorman and cut it so I didn’t have to remove the hub. It is about 1mm to short after a shoddy hack saw cut but past the threads on the replacement lug nut. Used an impact driver with washers and a lug nut to seat it. Worked out well except I now have a small squeak coming from the that wheel. It went down considerably after about 15 minutes of driving but still worried since i cant tell what it is. It’s possible i overtightened the axel nut since my shit wrench only goes to 150. I torqued it to 150 and gave it an extra snug past with the breaker but I’m guessing that’s a place with the spec matters a lot. Going to rent a larger driver and set it to 180. Hopefully it goes away completely or else I’ll just replace the whole hub/ bearing next week.

Sucks to hear about the broken stud but glad you were able to replace it. Nice to hear the video was helpful to you. As for the noise, not quite sure what it could be. It is possible for the axle to make some noise if it hasn't been tightened correctly. That axle nut needs to be tightened to 300 Nm (220 ft lb) for Model 3/Y. Was it like a quick squeel when accelerating and decelerating or a more constant squeel when moving? And was it when driving straight or when cornering?

Cool, that's great to hear. Good luck! 😃 It's not too difficult, just best if you use a press or stud installer tool to get those new studs into the hub.

something i been hesitant to do for a long time now, would love to be able to run a thin spacer to dial in wheel fitment without risking running below minimum threads on the lug nuts. I will for sure re visit this awesome video again when i get to it one day

Just do it! 😁 It's really great being able to just fit whatever wheels you want with whatever size spacers necessary without having to worry about anything. Definitely been one of my best mods for sure. Makes switching to a new set of wheels, which I'm going to be doing within 2 weeks now, quite easy. Just need to get the correct width spacers and that's it. Only downside is when you fit wheels that don't really need spacers, you'll have pretty long wheel studs sticking out. But it hasn't really been an issue for me. Thanks for your kind words! 🙌

I replaced the wheel studs without removing the wheel hubs. Just remove the splash shield and there is plenty of space. I still like your video, but you overdid it.

Nice! 👍 You replaced with new stock ones or the same Dorman studs that I'm using? Because you can definitely replace the stock ones without removing the hubs but getting extended studs like the Dorman back in there is much more challenging. I couldn't find a spot to do it on my Tesla, even if I removed the splash guard. Either way, it's not overdoing it to remove the hubs. It really isn't that much more work and it's much better for the durability of the wheel bearings as you're not hitting the hubs with a big hammer. 😉 Thanks though! 😃

Thank you so much for this video! Just wanted to comment that I had to swap out 2 on my model s. I was able to do some by removing three screws on the splash shield, maneuver it a bit and feed the studs behind the shield into the assembly

Happy to read you were able to do it and that this video was of help to you. The OEM studs or similar length ones does make it easier to replace without having to remove the hub. With extended studs this sometimes isn't possible and hub removal is necessary. Haven't really done it on a Model S yet though.

@@Firehuntah I saw your comments below and can confirm that you can put in longer studs if needed with this method. At least on my 2013 model s

I followed the link from the TMC forum. Thank you for putting this up! I will need some small ramps like you have as my car is lowered more than yours and I can no longer get my jack underneath! Lol

You're welcome, I'm just happy to help others with all this info. :) Yep, that's always a bit of a problem when lowering your car. These kind of ramps work really well. Easy to drive on and off and jacking up the car is no problem again.

It's possible yes, just a bit difficult with these long Dorman studs. I have now placed studs from Mountain Pass Performance and they're much easier to fit. Much better quality too.

Where are those ramps from? I have had lumber pop up and damage my floor/freeze the car from moving and had to jack up to remove. These would be perfect for the track as I park on them after every session.

Yeah these ramps are really nice! Much better than using lumber. 😉 I got them from a store here in the Netherlands. Not sure if you can get them over there where you live or if they can ship internationally. The brand name is Froli, maybe if you search there you'll find something, or something close to it at least. Here's the link for the store in the Netherlands: www.obelink.nl/froli-multifunctioneel-oprijblok.html

How much longer are these than stock? I want to use 20mm slip on spacers
@Firehuntah

Not quite sure anymore but I believe between 30-40mm longer. I use 20mm slip on spacers with them myself as well for my Winter setup with still a lot of thread engagement. Can go even bigger than 20mm with these Dorman studs.

Do you have any idea if its only 1 type Of Wheel Bearing they use? I mean, if the wheel hub can be use in front wheel hub or vise versa
@Firehuntah
2 жыл бұрын
Hmm I don't know that I'm afraid. It's been a long time now since doing the work on those hubs. Don't remember if they were exactly the same for front and rear or not. I do believe the fronts were different on mine as they didn't have the opening for the drive shaft. If there are any other differences I don't know.

I need to replace the back wheel studs on my 2015 Model S (P85D), do you know if that would be done the same way?
@Firehuntah
4 жыл бұрын
Probably not that much of a difference. It's mostly the same on every car really. Only difference I can tell for the Model S is that the parking brake is a seperate unit. But perhaps you can just leave that on the brake disc as well, just like I did with the brake calipers. If not, then you'll have to disengage the parking brake first, then remove the connector and only after that remove the actual parking brake unit. Otherwise you run the risk of having the parking brake engage while you have it off the brake disc. And that won't be fun to put back on then. ;) But other than the parking brake I don't think there really is a difference. The wheel studs are exactly the same size as for the Model 3 as well.

It's actually not too bad. With the right tools you can do this pretty quickly. I used hand tools only at first, only at the end I had to use an hydraulic press to press the new studs in. One thing to make this easier is a stud installer tool. No need for hydraulic press that way and probably faster to install. Once installed though it's so great to be able to use any size spacer you want and not be stuck with only 5mm max or having to resort to bolt on spacers.
