Just be aware that Coppersafe will totally give you a “false positive” of an ammonia reading with the API Ammonia test kit! I ran several tests with tank water and distilled water. After contacting both Mardel and API this was a solid conclusion. Seems the only viable way to test for ammonia after you have dosed with Coppersafe is the Seachem Ammonia Badge.

Is there anything else that causes a false positive? I’ve done like 7 water changes in the past 24 hours and my tank is spotless, but the ammonia keeps reading 2-4ppm with the API test kit.

Can you use a smaller ratio when testing to save stretch out the kit. Instead of 8 drops of each in 5 ml, like 2 drops of each in 1.25ml?
@cornertankcorner
6 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting question, you can test that theory by performing that test as per instructions and then do it your way then compare the results. I assume there will be some issues with the amount of water to accurately measure results.
@titothebeast9152

I tested it using half the ratio in the directions; 2.5ml water, 4 drops of each bottle. I got the same results, as with the amount noted in the directions.

You use a pipette, I use a syringe, so much better than dipping that vial into the water isn't it. Great tank! Love the shrimp.

Use a big needle. Shooting water with high speed through a small needle changes the pH and air content. In case you want to measure that too...

Don't the instructions say to wear gloves because the chemicals can burn? I have had it soon on me, but it didn't hurt, it just smelt weird and I washed it off. I'm worried I should be using gloves.

Probably, they have to protect them self from lawsuits. I never wear gloves and like you if I get it on my hands just rinse off. On the other hand why not protect yourself from this one, we get exposed to poisons every day so one less exposure could only have benefits. Thanks for commenting, cheers!

Thanks for all your videos. Question my tap water has almost .50 ppm amonia chloramine, my tank is reducing but not all of it. And prime works for like 24 hrs. RO water is not an option for me. I was trying to set up a cichlid tank but ratio of amonia and ph, would be worst for higher ph fish like cichlids i think. My current tank is planted tank some fish died (3) and I was doing alot of water changes but my problem was my tap water. Thanks for your feedback.
@cornertankcorner

Hi Diego, is this tank still cycling? Are you adding bacteria like nutrafin cycle it sechem stability, or others. Water changes won’t help if it’s still cycling as the bacteria requires ammonia to feed on.
@diegosandovalmiamifl8445
5 жыл бұрын
@@cornertankcorner yes it was already cycle, but every time that i was introducing new water with conditioner i noticed those readings, so I came out with a water hose filter on amazon a big one. And the conditioner and that help me alot. Plus my photos plant and now is much better. That filter claims that reduce chloramine and chlorine.

Thanks for the movie, but 2 issues are missing: # The water samples MUST be taken from filters's outlet. From the amonia levels we can conclude the filter is " bio-working" yes or no. The other issue: # Compare two tests from the filters's outlet and from tap water to compare. Technically speaking, tap water is zero amonia so this sample is the benchmark. Thanks

Actually no. For the first one he just wanted to see if the water is good enough for the fish to leave. The second one is not needed, just a waste of material.

why do a water change for ammonia a 2ppm if you are cycling the tan? where is the advantage?
@cornertankcorner
8 жыл бұрын
+paco barr Because the ADA Aquasoil Leaches ammonia. In order to speed up the process I do water changes to lower the ammonia. This is a normal procedure for ADA Aquasoil. Basically I want to get the ammonia out of the substrate. Lol even after four 90% water changes I am still at 2ppm for ammonia. Also I don't use a heater. Hope this helped clarify my reasoning for water changes. :)

New to all this, so please correct me, but wouldn't more ammonia be good at this point? The nitrfying bacteria eat that right? So more ammonia = more nitrfying bacteria = faster ammonia regulation = faster cycle. Is my thinking correct here? When using Dr. Tims to quick cycle, you raise the ammonia to 5 ppm, so why would 2 ppm be bad here? Just trying to understand everything, love your videos, cheers.
@martialag

You can buy an ammonia remover.
5 жыл бұрын
@@ThePoonjuice Too much ammonia results in one species of bacteria colonizing all the territory and the other starving to death before even getting to do its job. I added an overkill of ammonia into my fresh 23 gallon tank so that my test registered blue (>10 ppm), and after 3 weeks of just keeping the water stable nitrite barely registered, no nitrate. Also the water went from 7pH to 6.7, making the whole ordeal impossible to maintain. The filter was slimy, though, which means the bacteria grew. So what he does is right - need to maintain ammonia in the range of 2 ot 5 ppm, because once it goes past 5 the second species of bacteria die out.

If the tank is properly cycled and regular water changes are done ammonia shouldn’t be a problem. Check you filtration to make sure that works and you can also add some prime to detoxify ammonia.

It should be zero. At lower Ph it would be OK but you may want to find out why you have any ammonia. Is it fully cycled?
