SIMPLE EXPLANATION, let me know if im wrong! Lumbrical muscles are four muscles: the first and second (lateral two) innervated by median nerve but the 3rd and 4th lumbrical( medial two) innervated ok, the action of lumbrical muscle is flexion of metacarpophalangeal joint and extenstion of interphalangeal joint(except thumb} by ulnar N. when theres ulnar nerve injury in the lower level (i.e. wrist) so there will be loss of this so theres will be extenstion of extention of MCP JOINT and flexion of interphalangeal joint due to the action of flexor digitorum profundus, so there will be obvious claw hand, but if the ulnar nerve injuried at the higher level(i.e. elbow) there will be impair function of flexor digitorum profundus and lesser flexion in IP joint so there will be less claw hand ! and this called paradox action beacuase in reallity the higher level of injury the more impairement(which is its also true in here) but in the case of ulnar nerve only externally show less defect if the lession is higher!

Thank you. I have a ulnar claw from an injury in 07. I found myself in a strange position when I amputated my pinky in June of 23 and was fortunate enough to have it reattached. I am trying to get a better understand what it is that I am working on and ultimately, what it is that I have. One thing I find interesting is how difficult it is for a person without an ulnar claw to replicate the different shapes a claw can make. I found it difficult to copy my clawed hand for any period of time with my other hand and I use that hand on the fret board of a guitar and would consider it to be stronger and more agile than before playing. That surprised me, but help me understand why physicians aren't always making the shapes as my claw when mimicking the appearance of an ulnar claw. For example, my pinky and ring finger begin to curl back more at the nuckle closest my hand when I try to hold all my fingers out straight🫷✋️. Also, for me, I am completely unable to bring all my fingers together while extended in that position✋️. For me, my 2 clawed fingers hang out🖖 separated from the others and themselves🖐 and are not capable of touching up against the fingers next to them. Unless... I make a fist! While forming a fist✊️, is the only time I can get the clawed fingers to touch the sides of the fingers they are next to✊️. While forming a fist, the fingers move closer to the ones next to them and are able to finally touch the other while halfway🤌 to forming a fist ✊️. It's been an interesting experience. I greatly appreciate being able to gain a better understanding of why my body operates the way it does (or doesn't). Thank you. This was the video that made it click in my head for me with understanding something I pondered on for 16 years and I appreciate your video!

Doctor Atif's observations seem to be wrong, normally, the more proximal an injury, the more the deformity, and the more distal an injury, the less the deformity, but, remember this is a "paradox", and so in ulnar paradox, the more proximal an injury, the less the deformity, and the more distal an injury, the more the deformity. That is why, it is called an "Ulnr paradox".

This was a very well done explanation. I woke a few years ago with a "claw hand." All my fingers appear to be fine now except my ring finger. I have chronic pain in my Rhomboid area and aches and pains down my tricep into my elbow that then leads down to my ring finger (or so it seems to me). Related or not, when shaving and I tilt my head back I get those pins and needles in the same area. I did have Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) C5-C7 a number of years prior. My thought is that I have an ulnar impingement somewhere between the Rhomboid and the ring finger. Thoughts? I sure do not want another EEG!

@stuartinglis6133

No real remedy other than normal healing, which is highly dependent on how the injury occurred. Injuries from crushing tend to heal very well, while certain types of cuts are more variable. As a very general rule of thumb, most neuroregeneration occurs within 6 weeks of injury. If you have had the injury for more than two months, I am afraid that the likelihood of neuroregeneration is poor, and that little can be done. I would recommend consulting an occupational therapist and/or physiotherapist for a full assessment and treatment plan.

Target audience is the medical students I teach, who are studying for USMLE Step 1 examinations. I'm a little surprised that this ever went over 100 hits, to be honest. Still, it seems to have been helpful for other students studying the topic, so I've left it up. Sorry, but this is a very advanced and confusing topic, and intended for a very small audience of doctors in training, who already have a strong understanding of general anatomical terms.
@minniemouse4332

I understand your target audience was not me but I found another site and I must say that the technique you described worked for me. Nerve flossing as opposed to braces. I now can sleep with elbows bent and no numbness in any fingers (median and ulna nerve were both affecting my hand and all fingers.)
