It's a real phenomenon. Take an AAA goalie who is used to 80mph slapshots and put him in beer league and he's going to struggle with the pacing and lack of aim. It's easier for good goalies to stop a laser beam than a lob-changeup from a shooter who doesn't even know where his shot is going. It's like an MMA guy fighting a drunk guy off the street. They are so bad they are unpredictable and ironically more difficult sometimes. So yeah slow shots and easy shots sometimes get to us lol

I can imagine that was a wild fucking time playing goalie with how rapidly the styles changed over those years. Care to share anything that you learned during that time that was like "oh my god, you can do that?". I've been a huge fan of hockey since I could literally form memories, so it always fascinates me hearing older stories.

@@slippi2476 grew up in a non hockey town, and my parents wouldn't let me play football. Played Road hockey, even after I got my License, but regularly Ice skated, 2,3 nights a week, dreaming of playing real hockey, Got forwards gear, with my own money, and played drop in hockey, but found goalies were scarce......so now I needed goalie gear, as I was OBSESSED with all the full Fiberglass Goalie Masks back in that Era. Gives up a baker's dozen throughout the week but still makes the nightly highlight reel, basically for not being where he should be...in the crease. Later, we see him in the weekly review and/or top 5 saves or whatever, for having good intuition and game awareness, solid reflexes, and a fuck-ton of luck. Patrick Roy introduced the league to the butterfly and now every goalie uses the butterfly. I wonder if Fluery's crappie 🎣 technique will catch on the same way.

This happens in beer league, particularly to solid goalies who are great at positioning for shots. So much is about subconsciously reading the shot before it happens, and with a wide variety of skill in the skaters, it becomes very difficult to do so. Still, it is definitely only occasional. When I played beer league goalie, I learned just to go down early and cover the lower part of the net for the low skilled players. Then it didn't matter reading when they were going to shoot or where it was going to go, because they can't elevate the puck super well and when they did, it was slow enough that positioning wasn't super important because I had enough time to move the glove, blocker or shoulder to get it. The best beer league goalies played more with reaction time than with perfect positioning.

This is me 100%. Definitely a mental part of the game where you get used to making desperations saves all the time that you forget the basics. Then when it comes to a routine subtle movement save you have a brain fart. years of being on sucky teams I've always had to over compensate that my development suffered from not getting the basics down right.
