In my headcanon, the reason they got fired isn't Ted's rampant homophobia, the unbelievably insensitive anecdotes, or the quite frankly ludicrous amount of drinking. No, they got fired because they revealed the special secret snooker words to Lady in Red.

I don't get it, is snooker a game for depressed suicidal people?
@youcanlearnalotfromlydia
2 жыл бұрын
I don't expect you'll see this or necessarily care all these years later but for anyone else reading the comments who doesn't get it: the joke is that they're really unprofessional and bad at their jobs. Smoking despite the "do not smoke" sign. Getting really drunk. Using a hairdryer live on air and just putting it down to sound/ technical difficulties. In series two they talk about players' sexualities (and David's character talk's about Rob's, and says how he, David, was best man at his, Rob's wedding but then it turned out it was all a lie, a sham, the marriage, when he came out after over 40 years "living a lie"). In series three the running joke is about David's character speaking indiscreetly about a snooker player's difficulties with mental health, and Rob's joins in. In both cases, sexuality and suicidal ideation, you don't talk about above people's private lives or private struggles to strangers not in the know, let alone to millions of listeners on live radio! I suppose it comes across as funny as David's character sounds so sincere and serious due to being proud of having been there and saved a life but doesn't know how bad it sounds (how he helped isn't bad it's how indiscreet he is being that is the social faux pas). In series two we laugh not at the homophobic things David's character says (he says he realises his fears of being jumped on in the recording booth he shares with his gay colleague are unfounded, and he won't be jumped on. Because he's on his guard!) but because such stuff is utterly unfounded, preposterous and ridiculous: we laugh at the prejudiced character and his absurd views, not with him. Here, we the viewers think these two are being all sensitive and kind and supportive towards the depressed snooker player after all but with the "God bless. And cheer the f' up!" punchline, it goes to show that these two are ultimately clueless and insensitive and unprofessional after all, ruining their otherwise perfect attempt at supporting their professional colleague (with the lovely song sung in support of him). There's no reputation for snooker players being depressed or anything: it's just making fun of people who are tactless in trying to discuss sensitive topics but doing so in an insensitive way.
