if the commercial following Johnny Most's famous call being the end of a bedtime story this would've been perfect for it. The end of a bedtime story, John Havlicek stole the ball.

Havlicek was my favorite player as a kid. He could play one, two or three and was probably the greatest sixth man in history before he became a starter after Russell retired. During his last season in '77-'78, he started in the backcourt alongside fellow graybeard Dave Bing and I can still hear Johnny Most saying "Havlicek over to Dave Bing, Bing stops, Bing pops - BING-BANG!"

Larry Bird did pretty much the same thing against Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals. Except the Celtics were down one point. Bird got the ball to DJ for an uncontested layup and the Celtics won. I've always wondered about that play. It's almost as if the Celtics had planned it. Upon the release of the inbounds pass, DJ left his man and cut towards the hoop. And Bird didn't hesitate. It's like he knew DJ would be there, cutting towards the hoop. It's actually kind of spooky.

He didn't start cutting until bird got his hand on it. Either way, he would probably have gone that direction anyway to trap dumars or whoever it was.

That was the uncanny thing about Bird though. He definitely wasn't the fastest guy on the court, but he had a quick first step and seemed to know before anyone else what would happen, making him a step ahead of everyone else.

lol why don't players free-throw like 0:37 these days when they go to the line? It's awesome!

Rick Barry, who retired in 1980, was probably the last player to consistently shoot free throws underhanded. His career free-throw percentage was in the .900's making him one of the best in NBA history. He tried to pass on this dying free-throw style to fellow Warrior teammate Clifford Ray, but it didn't catch on.

Havlicek stole the ball was more - a bad pass by Greer. The 76ers did not execute that last play very well. The 76ers should have tried for a shorter bounce pass and try to get Chamberlain a dunk. The 76ers lost Game #7.
