At my 1975 concert, Matty cried during this song and was sad for the rest of the show. But I'm so proud of him because he still gave it his all. Also instead of saying "This song is CALLED Me" he said, "This song is ABOUT Me"

wow. i didn't know that. I assumed he was talking about his father or a father figure. BUT a lot of the other lyrics confused me because they seemed like him. A LOT of their songs.. sound like he's talking to someone else. But i feel like they are self reflections or even self loathing a lot of the time. "you write about sex & killing yourself and how you hardly ever went to school.." I was like ... Who is he talking about..? because it kind of sounds like my life or the typical artists life. but a twisted shallow interpretation

Ok so just a thought here, but everyone is saying "don't you mind" as a question.(which is the most obvious one and you're probably right lol) But the song is called me. I almost wonder if "Me" is supposed to finish the sentence. Like when people say, "oh don't mind me." Like he's saying he's not important enough. "I was thinking bout' killing myself" then it's almost like "but don't mind me." Idk but then other times it sounds like he's putting a play on words and speaking to his mind. For example "don't you, mind?" I'm not sure tbh

I like your theory. He explained though that the song is written from his father's perspective after his divorce with patty's mother. His father 'put his mother through hell' and 'hurt his brother as well'. Matty still loves his father and tries to forgive him, that's why his father asks whether or not matty cares about what he's done! if i find the link where i read it, i'll post it below!

yeah but certain bits like "I put your mother through hell... I hurt your brother as well" makes me think he's just drawing from several people in his life's perspective. like that could be from his dad's perspective (not to be invasive, just what I thought). he says the song is about guilt. maybe its from everyone else's perspective, wondering why he doesn't care. or just a mixture of himself and others. idk. its just so interesting

I think he means "don't you care?" to himself when he says "don't you mind?", like he's saying all these terrible things he did, in the end saying "I love you, don't you mind?", maybe being the most terrible action, still loving and caring for himself after everything he has done.

I would just like to say a prayer for anyone who is struggling like Matty in this song. I understand the line "I was thinking bout killing myself, don't you mind?" because I almost did one night, I felt like no one cared and I couldn't take the pain of this world any longer. Now I am the happiest I have ever been in my life, and I want you to know that it really does get better, you just have to give yourself a chance and pull through. Try to see a professional, even though I know how hard it is to open up to someone about these types of problems. Stay strong, hand in there. i love you

this makes me bawl my eyes out as we all know this is about matty talking to his father Mattys father talking to matty but it's about basically how their relationship went and how everything went down hill if u really listen to the lyrics you will get the story behind it all its such a heart felt song and I practically feel mattys emotion and hurt in the song he's such a strong man and his and the band's music mean everything to me and to themselves cause obviously they write from the soul and really just pour they're hearts, feelings, emotions, every thing into their songs it's so beautiful cause we can grieve and realize and understand exactly how they must have felt during that period of their lives or what they are coming from or trying to explain I think it's so amazing and really truly beautiful how he can do such a thing I feel for matty in this song he wrote and how many emotions and frustrations he was going through.
