@@ge99ne This. Everyone is talking like they did this test on some gentle slope. This is the Ike Gauntlet. It's the steepest stretch of downhill road available. I had some after thoughts. It appears to me the trailer was loaded WAAAAY too tongue heavy. The water tote appeared to be all the way in the front of the trailer which if true would severely overload the tongue weight even with the weight distribution gizmo (I have never used one) and cause overloading of the Jeep suspension-leading to some rear end sway. It also appears to have been loaded to one side and not in the middle causing more instability issues. I wonder what the tongue weighed? They talk about the gross weight of the trailer but don't mention the tongue weight? Or did I miss that part? Since the tote was not completely full it would also cause sway due the the liquid sloshing around fore. aft and side to side. I'm not saying the Jeep is a leaf spring truck when it comes to towing but there may be some other things to consider when you see the movement of the Jeep they failed to mention verbally. Either way not bad for such a small displacement motor and rear coil suspension.

Hello again Nathan&Andre’, once again great job. But I do have a couple pieces of advice. When you setup the WDH, that’s very similar to mine, that’s a Fastway E2, you are supposed to hook up to the trailer, then before drilling any mounting holes for the bar perch, that is when you need to crank both up as far as you can, then place the bars in the hitch mount, bring the bars over to the trailers chassis to locate the bar perch, then mark an drill the holes, still high enough to need the pry bar the WDH should come with. That’s how you get the most available weight distribution! I mention this due to the fact the truck/trailer still has sag at the hitch! Even though there are only two of you and the bed is empty! If mounted like I advised the combined truck/trailer profile would be totally level at the highest weight combination! The other bit of advice, you should have the 4 way flashers on when going under the speed limits, especially when under 45.

The diesel will help with the towing. This demonstrates the most extreme towing situation you can ever do and the reality is most Gladiators will probably only be towing a boat or hauling mulch

Gladiator diesel towing rating will be LESS than the V6. Sources say it likely will be rated 500 pounds less.
@jimparker7778

No, Shawn. A really tough towing test would be on ordinary highway, not Interstate. Speed zones, traffic lights, etc. The issue here is that the Jeep was obviously over its towing capacity for power. Sounds like otherwise the chassis and handling were very good for a midsize truck and such a heavy load. For a long time I've been hammered by people on forums (who happen to love smaller trucks) because I think that this kind of work is for full size trucks, not midsize.
@TheRamGuy
5 жыл бұрын
@@jimparker7778 I disagree completely. First this vehicle and all trims of Gladiator are rated to tow 7500lbs and they had 7000lbs loaded. Second you are saying driving on a U.S.Route with stop lights is more challenging than going up and down a 12,000ft mountain in a naturally aspirated truck?? I tow a 9000lbs travel trailer all over the east coast and midwest going up hills is far more taxing than city driving with stop lights
@TheRamGuy
5 жыл бұрын
@@NukePooch1 how come the diesel wasn't rated for less towing in the Ram and that was against a V8. You saying the diesel with 420lb ft of torque won't be able to match the V6 with 260lb ft even if the diesel weighs a little more?

Folks commenting on the lack of power need to keep in mind that this is a normally aspirated engine climbing to a bit less than 11,200 ft msl over a 6% grade. At best, the engine is only putting out about 65% of it's rated horsepower. So yeah, it's going to be a little anemic. Put the turbo-diesel in the Gladiator and things should improve significantly here in the mountain west.
@bullrambler

I would suspect that the 4:10 gears are designed for the Rubicons tire size which I think it was mentioned that they were 285-70 x 17. This would keep them turning efficiently on the trails - more so then towing maximum load. Now the towing set-up was a good idea for safety - which enables the weight of the trailer being distributed over more of total length of the truck frame. And the trailer brakes were also good idea for safety as well. After watching this video my initial thoughts is based on wondering how the Gladiator would have done with a lower gear ratio - like a 4:56 or 5:10. Just to see if the gears would step up into 4th or maybe 5th gear and not rev the engine so hard. With the results of the Gladiator's towing at Maximum Load being shown here on TFLT, I don't think I would buy this vehicle for towing the kind of weight that was used in this video.

After the years of developing this thing it should have done better but let’s call it what it is it’s a toy that can be used as a truck not a truck that can be used as a toy. And in my opinion that is what all midsize trucks are.

Jeep isn’t marketing this so much for towing as they are just a truck just the same as how 90%+ of half ton crew cabs get used nothing more than a point A to point B vehicle with cargo room, and this is for people who want a Jeep in that category. It’s a niche vehicle.

$60,000 for a truck you have to buy that many after market parts to make it function like a truck. Ridiculous on jeeps part considering a majority of these will be mall crawlers and never see dirt.

Because it’s not really a truck. It’s a Jeep with more cargo room. And Jeep’s target customer isn’t going to be towing much of anything that would require trailer brakes.

Don't expect that engine to last long doing stuff like that with it! However, it should be fine towing what most people need to tow... aka less than 3500lbs... not in the mountains at altitude. Looks like the Chevy Colorado is still king in mid-sized truck for towing... for now anyways. The Ranger should do pretty good with its turbo whenever you guys get to test it.

FYI this is very high altitude. I have towed many times on that exact road with my GMC Canyon. At least 20-30% of the motor's power is robbed by altitude. The Gladiator will tow much, much better at the altitude you live at if you live lower than 9000-11000 ft.

Seems like a good tow rating to me. I like that a manufacturer rates the vehicle at what it can reliably tow in the most challenging circumstances. SAE sets requirements on how fast it must do the task and I presume this met the test. When a vehicle flies up a super Ike test in 8 minutes, that just tells me they left a lot on the table for most situations. This truck would comfortably tow 7000 pounds in 98% of circumstances, thus allowing a lot of utility with warranty coverage. It does the job just fine getting up the mountain for those rare cases. It takes an extra 2 minutes, but unless you tow the Ike everyday, who cares? I swear nobody commenting here ever towed anything before every vehicle had 400+ HP. As for the engine revving, that is absolutely nothing compared to the durability tests engines are subjected to. Cold starts and lugging an engine are far more detrimental than continuous high speed operation.
