I just bought a 2022 FX3. I appreciate that the 1x10 Drive train is simpler and more reliable. The gear range is nearly the same as my old 3x8 drivetrain, just a bit less high speed gear.. The tradeoff for me is that when you get to the summit of a hill you have to click up 5 or 6 gears, one at a time, and can't get the bigger jump up of a larger front gear switch. The brakes are excellent btw.

I have the 2021 FX 3 Disc and it's been a very good bike for me. For the riding I do with it, I definitely prefer the 2x drivetrain and I've had no issues with mine. As with all modern derailleur systems, it you keep it clean and lubricated it will perform just fine and mine has done just that. Other than being heavier than I'd prefer, I'd recommend this model to just about anyone. At some point I'd like to upgrade to a full carbon FX Sport 6, but they are impossible to find now. Thanks for the review.

Great review. I got my 2022 FX3 a couple of weeks ago. I also have a 2020 Dual Sport 3. Because of the cold weather, still haven't had the chance to fully put the FX3 through its paces. After about 30 miles in the saddle, I prefer the 1X drive train of the FX3. Its simpler to shift, especially when I go up a hill. I am not a speed biker, but the bike seems to be a bit faster. To be expected, bumps are a bit harsher with the fixed fork of the FX3. I will continue to use the Dual Sport for gravel and off road, but the FX3 will be my road back.

The for the review! You are definitely in safe territory going with an opinion for 1x. However for what this bike seems designed for, I've got to go with the minority opinion with a wider gear range whether a 2x or a wider 1x. I will go back and re-review how Trek is marketing this bike, but if I want to go more MTB trail or XC I'm going to find a different bike. For fun rides, commuting and a little dirt work man I've got to have a wider gear range. But I think Trek sort of have the market what they think they want. The fad is towards shiny bubbles behind a 1x with your local IPA craftbrew. If you're buying I'm in. I'd just prefer something else.
@bonzobanana1
3 жыл бұрын
1x also benefits city riding, the straight up and down gear choice is fast and logical and when your mixing it with German executive cars and heavy goods vehicles its good to be thinking about only the road and not the bike. 10 speed is thinner cogs and chains though and the tolerance for changing gears is much finer. There are some issues with 10 speed. I personally would have preferred a 1x 8 or 9 speed for durability and simplicity but I understand if you want a clutch then your options might be limited. I seem to remember with chain quick links they are reusable for 7,8 and 9 speeds but for 10 speeds and above they are single use only. Just making the point about how much thinner the metals are to enable 10 speed. This also has ramifications with more frequent adjustment of derailleurs because cable stretch is more significant when the cogs are more tightly spaced. So in some ways 1x 10 speed is lower maintenance but in others it is higher maintenance.
@synthetica8472

I specially selected the FX3 over the FX4 because I wanted a 2x drivetrain. The flexibility to hit the big ring on straightaways and downhills is excellent. On my MTB, I like the 1x but I don't need the same range I do out on the open road.
@willway9378
3 жыл бұрын
Chris Worley I agree completely! I'm just not having any problems changing gears, way smoother than some of the bikes I've had over the years. I just like having the larger gear range for my 2x bikes than the 1x, but for MTB specific activities i understand the desire for the less complex shifting of a 1x and having no front derailleur to cause problems. Still on a flatter XC course... don't know that I would not want the larger range or go with a 1x with a larger chain ring to ensure best top end speed while maintaining those climbing gears. I'm starting to sound kind of N+1

I like the gearing much better on the newer (2022) version. I'm a big fan of the triple crank on the Verve 2 (28/38/48) but I don't understand the 46/30 on the earlier FX 3. I think I would be switching back and forth too much between those two chain rings. The single 40 tooth ring on the new FX3 I think hits the sweet spot combined with the 10X 11-46 cassette. I think it would be perfect if the cassette was 11x with a gear that split the difference between 1st and 2nd because I think it might seem like too much of a jump to the big 46 "monkey gear" from 2nd. Still, I think a really well thought out combination. I would take the gearing on the new FX 3 or the Verve 2 any day over the Verve 3 (and the now replaced FX3) double of 46/30. I want a chain ring that works for 95% of the riding (like the 38 on the triple with the 8x cassette) or probably 100% on the new FX3. I think the 40 & 11 combination wouldn't spin too fast very often (if ever). The extra 2 teeth (40 tooth) compared to the 38 & 11 combo on the triple I think would give just enough extra speed to not wish for a bigger chain ring.

2x9 doesn't really give you more gears. If you shift as you should, you only have 4-5 gears per front chain ring. 1x10 is much better.

Do you know what a used 2021 fx3 disc in good condition would typically sell for as of April 2022? Btw, the trek website shows a list price of $999 for the 2022 model ($100 increase).

Considering this bike or the Dual Sport 3. I’m coming from a 15 year old MTB Giant. I don’t really do heavy mountain biking anymore, as I am now usually riding with my 5 year old on pavement and the occasional fire road/light trail at state parks once a month. I’m thinking I could upgrade the tires on this if I startled doing more frequent gravel/trails. Anyone have any ideas or feedback on which route would be best? Any feedback is welcome, thanks!

I think either option would work! The FX 3 can fit 35c tires with fenders installed, or even 38c if you do not have fenders on your bike. Gravel tires come in both those sizes so you would be able to swap out the tires easily. However it may just be easier to get the dual sport and not have to worry about switching tires out.

@@TalalipopMTB Thanks for the info! With upgrading the tires to a 35c or 38c, would the FX 3 disc have the advantage over the Dual Sport when riding with the suspension locked? I guess I’m just on the fence about which component I’d be happier with in the long run: Carbon fork or decent front suspension?
@TalalipopMTB

The FX would still be faster than a dual sport with the suspension locked. Suspension just takes the edge off a ride and makes you feel more comfortable, but if you prefer speed over comfort and are not riding anywhere too rough, the FX is better

@@TalalipopMTB thanks again for the input! I think you're right that out of the box, the DS will probably be closer to what I would eventually want to do with FX in terms of tire size. At my age and purpose, I think comfort > than speed. I appreciate the feedback, and congrats on the awesome content!

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzitem.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

@Talalipop MTB. Nice video! I bought a 2023 FX3 last week ($1049) but decided I should have gotten the FX4 Sport instead to have the full carbon frame. Went back to the Trek Dealer but didn't really like the colors and that it had the same Deore components as the FX3 I was exchanging so I ordered a 2023 FX5 in Red Carbon Smoke for $2099. Do you think the 2023 Trek FX Sport 5 will be worth double the cost of the 2023 FX3 I had a week? I’m mostly a runner but plan on biking once a week between 15 to 50 miles. Thank you kind sir

Hi talalipop Please help me decide between the fx3 2022 and dual sport 3 2022 for 16km commute on roads/canal side, some bumps along the way.
@TalalipopMTB
2 жыл бұрын
If that commute is mainly on the road or paved trails then the FX 3 will be faster for sure. You can fit up to a 700x38c tire on the FX without fenders if you do want more comfort and capability as well later on.

The FX line has lost a lot of appeal to me as it has gone to 1x drivetrains and, in many models, thicker tires. Seems to be merging into a gravel bike and that doesn't interest me.

I just got a FX 2 two days ago. And I've been putting it through the tests. I also have a 2021 Dual Sport 1 as a back up. As for the FX2.....the front fork is aluminum.. it has a 2x derailer in the the front and 9 in the back totaling 18 gears. It's a lot lighter than my dual sport and thinner tires which is what my concern is. It's hybrid just like the dual sport. But it leans more towards the road bike side than the dual sport which leans more towards the mountain bike side. Another reason I'm holding on to the dual sport as a back up. I want to see how the FX handles gravel or loose ground. Since it is lighter it weight, it's a lot faster than the DS on paved roads. I'm pleased with my purchase. Kudos to Trek and the Trek stores in Middletown and Brielle NJ. Great folks

@@dennissmith863 I could not wait and ended up getting the 2021 FX 2. FX was the only choice for me as 99% of my riding is on road and sidewalks.

I went to see both the FX 4 2021 and the FX 3 2022. Basically the same bike except for the 1 extra gear, a better stem apparently, and the Affinity DLR wheel. In Canada, the price difference only $60 CAD which is $45 USD. I bought the FX 3 2022 because it did not have a chip/paint missing on the fork. lol
