The 3 original languages of the Bible are Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. No book of the Bible has come down to us in its original language. We only possess copies, which are more or less exact. Recalling an adage of my #SacredWriting teacher, 'to translate is always to betray'; hence, one cannot know a literary work thoroughly unless one is able to read it in the original language.
Hebrew is the language in which almost all of the Old Testament was written. It consists of 22 letters, all consonants. Vowel sounds are indicated by dots or lines drawn above or below the consonant, they were added in the late period (6th - 8th century). In addition, some letters are spelled differently depending on where they are located, whether within a word or at the ends.
The Jews of #Palestine, Syria and Babylonia after the Babylonian exile spoke Aramaic and no longer understood Hebrew, so it became necessary to translate the Old Testament into the #Aramaic dialect of the country in which it was to be written. Short sections were written in Aramaic: Ezd 4:8-6:18; Dan 2:4-7:28; some words in Genesis and a sentence in Jeremiah.
The #Greek attested in the Bible is an example of Hellenistic Greek, the language that spread with the conquests of Alexander the Great. Biblical Greek comprises the language of the LXX and that of the New Testament writings. The latter is the direct heir of the former, which is essentially a language of translation.
Today, for the study of the languages of the Bible, we have many supports, the result of studies and important comparisons.
