Have you ever noticed that conversations can get derailed in the first few seconds?
Either because of jumping in too fast or not jumping in soon enough?
It’s easy to stay at the superficial level (and never get to what we really wanted to say) or to go round in circles because the time isn’t right to bring the deeper issue.
In this video, I take you through 3 stages of conversational presence to help you be more effective at addressing the issues you want to talk about in work and life.
1) Entry Presence: slowing down to connect with the person and situation (easy to forget when you’re rushing in from another meeting)
2) Middle Presence: checking the assumptions and biases that are activated when we meet (both yours and the other persons, to create a sense of shared reality/context)
3) Deep Presence: staying connected to what you’re truly wanting to say and noticing what’s getting in the way.
Remember that what’s both challenging and fascinating about conversations is that whatever you’re going through, so is the other person - at a deep, fundamental level. If we become skilful at navigating this, conversations become powerful opportunities to create change and connection.
If you’d like to find out more and practise these skills in an energising and safe space with other professionals and leaders of social impact, join is for the RSA Speedcoaching session where we’ll show you how to apply 5 principles of transformational conversations in real time.
