I'll say one thing for the first n64 castlevania, the intro was oozing with atmosphere. If you immediately run ahead lightning strikes a nearby tree. It's scripted for when you're close though, so if you idle for a while the storm will go away, run ahead and no lightning strike, so the tree remains intact. I just think that's insane for a game in the 90s. Games today never do stuff like that

Judgement actually added some backstory to Grant Danasty in his Story mode. We learned that Grant had feelings for Sypha, but she didn't return his affections because of his appearance and because her feelings were for Trevor. So Grant became a jealous loner, but during his story arc he was finally able to make peace with himself, Trevor, and Sypha's marriage to Trevor.

I'm pretty sure Grant doesn't actually feel feelings, especially for other human beans. He's Grant Da Nasty and he's a nasty man, who doesn't feel feelings, just like a real man. Feelings are for p*******, and he's Grant Danasty, he doesn't have time for feelings. Although if anyone has any recommendations for helping me feel feelings again, I'm open to trying them. I especially don't feel feelings during cutscenes, because they drag on so long, and if I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch the original Robocop or The Thing (Carpenter) because those are the only 2 good movies that exist, and they don't recognize or waste time on feelings except: "here's what this bad guy feels when he gets shot in the dick" Also, Robocop eats baby food. That is relatable, much moreso than some human "feeling feelings" for some other human, blah blah mushy boring. Robocop shoots people in the dick, and that is also relatable, as that's something I would enjoy doing.

I think you're a bit harsh towards Lords of Shadow. I only played the first and enjoyed it for what it is. Carmilla's castle was the point where it felt like a true Castlevania. Not nearly as good as the classics, but pretty alright in its own right. Despite this I want to take this opportunity to compliment you. Love your videos.

Ever try Castlevania Resurrection for the Dreamcast? Granted, it's a pre-alpha (barely a proof of concept) build with glitches ahoy and only playable by burning onto disc (or in my case running the disc images on a GDEmu), but if actually finished and released, showed it would have been...interesting, at least.

I feel like somewhere between the level design of the N64 games, and the combat and music of the PS2 Castlevanias, a really great game lies! I kind of wish they'd remake all four of them. Just making the graphics better and the controls more responsive for the N64 games would improve them immensely! As for Judgement, well Stop Skeletons and Maximilian Dood like it, so I think there's some dumb fun to be had with it. And by the way, you can turn off the quick time events in Lords of Shadow 2. Very surprised to see you talking about so many downloadable titles though! Good series of videos... Is there a Crunch in it's future?! That would be sick!

Man, I really hate how in LoS2 you're supposed to be playing Dracula but he is such a weakling, like, even in the prologue where he's supposed to be at his strongest. Remember how it was playing Legacy of Kain Defiance and how powerful Elder Kain felt. There is nothing of that in LoS2, you spend more time doing stealth shit and actively avoiding combat than actually beating the shit out of everything that moves the way Dracula is supposed to do.

3D Castlevania really isn't as bad as people say. I'd call the 2 n64 games and the 2 ps2 games to be quite underrated. I'm gonna have to get those ps2 games for my collection one of these days as i've never played them, but this video definitely made me want to.

You're absolutely correct. I own all the N64 and PS2 titles, and none of them are bad. The N64 titles are a bit clunky, but they're better than old reviews suggest them to be. The PS2 titles are hands down the best 3D Castlevania games to date, definitely worth playing. Lament of Innocence in particular gets extra cool points for literally being the origin story to the ENTIRE franchise including the birth of Dracula, the Belmonts, the Vampire Killer, everything.

Castlevania timeline was Igarashi's idea and it put the series on a dead end (Dracula final defeat must be set on the 1999 war). Before him there was no proper timeline ,developers could do whatever they want. People bash Castlevania Legends but it was more a prequel to Castlevania Adventure than Castlevania III.Both 1989 ganes originally told the same story: Ralph/Trevor "Christopher" fight against Dracula. All the portable games from Adventure to Order of Ecclesia just messed up the story.

Man, the hate for Lords of Shadow is strong here. Damn shame as I think it’s the best 3D Castlevania. I will agree the 2nd one sucks though. I never understood the complaint that it didn’t feel like a Castlevania. You’re a whip wielding Belmont traveling through gothic landscapes fighting Vampires, Werewolves, and other monsters. It’s more Castlevania than Symphony of the Night. When people say that complaint, they basically mean it didn’t rip off Metroid. How come ripping off Metroid is ok, but God of War is too far? With that said, part 2 was terrible.
@KamisamanoOtaku

@14:34 Yes. Many series could use their own fighting game, and Castlevania is no exception. @14:40 Unfortunately, *also* "Yes." Good idea, dubious execution. XP Oh, and to answer the question about why familiar characters don't look like themselves... IIRC, the characters were all redesigned by the creator of _Death Note._ This was when the anime based on Death Note was massive. Which is another idea that sounds great but where the execution is... not so great. >.>

Have you thought about doing an episode on games or franchises that came along and for one reason or another took over the spot of an older franchise? And if they succeeded in doing it better or not. For example, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and especially Bloodborne could all be considered as the games that took over Castevania's spot. Or how Nioh, Nioh 2 and even Sekiro took over the Onimusha void. Maybe even go as obscure as saying that Bloodborne took over the void Nightmare Creatures I and II left behind. That sorta thing.

I absolutely hated Lament of innocent (and yes i played through it)...even enjoyed castlevania 64 more. lament is just a really bad game...running from lackluster designed battle arena to battle arena...it's no fun. They totally missed what made the Franchise fun in the first place here. The only good thing about is, is that it adds an interresting point to the lore. As Dracula wasn't Dracula but still human and all that...it gets explained in this game how and why. But still..i regard this one as the worst castlevania game (maybe besidest he Wii beat em up one).
