Please, PLEASE start calisthenics with realistic expectations and easy progressions. I herniated a disc in my neck in August. I ignored it and tried to exercise normally, combined with bad sleep, overtraining and working too much, the herniation got so massive it was compressing my spinal cord. A "minor" injury turned into something that was disturbing my existence; it was destroying my energy levels, sleep and mood. Horrible constipation. Headaches. My whole right side was numb. Some nights I could not sleep because the pressure on my neck from the pillow. Some days I could barely walk. The last 3 months have been spent focussed on recovering and realising I need to slow down. It is finally healing and I am functioning significantly better; I imagine I will be back to calisthenics in 4-5 weeks but when I do, I'll be starting with the utmost basic, stuff like wall pushups and EVERYTHING will be assisted. This has been a learning experience for me; it has shown I need to care of myself, be patient. I have a truly unique appreciation for the human body and exercise; I lost 9 months of my life because of this. I am now looking forward to slowly sculpting my body.

The guys where i leave go topless even if its cold. Its evidently a vanity thing and the dudes are usually obnoxious as hell.

Also he is one of the most consistent, knowledgeable and honest fitness youtubers, so kudos for that! I see why the guys you refer to come across as douchy as they just want to show off... On the other hand I like the feeling of being 'free' and take my shirt of when it's warm enough and not weird. I just passed my certification exam for personal training and watching this makes me so happy! You go over some VERY important concepts that definitely have a serious need of being adressed in today's world. Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but when working on pull-up and muscle-up skills to avoid the use of momentum, or kipping, one needs to first develope proper core stabilization in order to keep your form nice and controlled.

Thanks so much Daniel, I feel that subconsciously I have been doing all of these techniques as I progress and become stronger. I'm 178cm and 73kg. I've had all these ideas about just bulking up and sacrificing lower body fat for increased muscle gain. The KZitem fitness industry so often misleads the masses and misinform (often for financial or social gain) in nasty ways. Your channel makes me happy, because there's someone out there who cares. You said "Lets face it, no one other than you truly cares about your results." I think you misinformed us, probably the only time ever, because I feel that you care about our results as well. You give good, honest, trustworthy advice about fitness. Long term mindset changes that benefits any person who coheres to the ideas they hear on this channel. My comment might not ever reach you, but I feel that I need to be thankful and make a point of it.

I really love your ways of explaining things. I have been lifting for many many years, got "stronger", went from 45kg to 85 kilograms. But last year I injured my back lifting heavy. I took this time as a positive experience and started watching Ido Portal, Movement, Calisthenics, and Dr. Stuart Mcgill who is doing research on the spine...etc I completely left lifting weights and started movement and calisthenics. I could squat 170 kg, but can't touch my toes and do easy pistol squat. I could bench but can"t even do a pick push up. This injury was really an "kick in the butt". Thank you for your videos, taught with clarity and humility (i find), you would make a really good teacher!

I'm grateful for your channel and I also would like to help: stop thinking and talking about your body as a separate entity from yourself. Your body is yourself, so follow this way around. Instead of separating yourself from your body and 10 thousand different things, find unity. Sure, while you're planning, you separate the world into bits, so it gets easier to understand and manipulate the world in your head. But don't let this mode of experience get hold of you, because it is not natural and eventually will give you "spiritual strains" hahaha (silly name I've made up for it, but sad reality for most people). If you use your training for meditation, you'll be forever fine. Find that spot there is no "myself and other". Where everything is experienced as one. When you look at a butterfly like that, everything becomes light. That's mental health :)

About the kipping thing, when not being able to do a pull-up or muscle-up you can start by doing kipping so that your muscles can get used to the move, a better alternative is with elastic bands but those are not always available. As such it can be good to progress by doing kipping and then slowly doing less kipping, and once you can do it without kipping you should start to worry about numbers. One might however say that you will fuck up technique and you might never get better, to prevent this I'd simply suggest filming yourself and comparing you to someone else.
@legslikelightning

Everything in this video is so true! Before I started practising the back lever, I first did reps in order to build the necessary strength for the technique. After I got stronger in the move I started practising eccentrics and my strength increased twofold. Now I've got the back lever down, I'm starting to work on hold time. ☺️
@Wiizardii
6 жыл бұрын
Kelisthenics Skills what rep exercises did you do to specifically help the back lever?
@legslikelightning
6 жыл бұрын
First I looked at the muscles that primarily work during the back lever and did reps to help build strength in them. For example, when I first started out I did a lot of Australian pull ups, bicep curls, reverse Australian pull ups and straight arm pulls; basically anything that works the upper/lower back, shoulders, chest and biceps. I only used rings for these reps. When I got my strength up in those I did a routine similar to this video:kzitem.info/news/bejne/q4F7mGp7gKZ6mmU You could always use a resistance band to help you get a feel for the body position, but I wouldn't recommend them as a long term solution because they halt progression. Good luck with your training!

Great video Daniel. Yes, these are very common mistakes. Exercise form determines difficulty. To get stronger and bigger we need to make exercises more difficult by using strict full range form, not less difficult by using half reps, stretch reflex and momentum. Scale the exercise to your current ability and patiently work towards the more difficult variations. As Arthur Jones said, your training should be geared to building strength, not demonstrating it.

agree with you but in my opinion, before starting your workout routine it's good to test your progression of any particular difficult skill you want to learn even if you do it with bad form, or you do not have yet the required strenght. This is because muscles or physics needs to adapt progressively with the position in which the body should be maintened during the execution, something you cannot really do when you work with the progression exercices
