Okay, I have a feeling that there ars going to be people watching this who have never experienced the shark attack and won't know what Ward is talking about...having been in BCT back in 2001, I will take this opportunity now to elaborate... The shark attack was developed specifically to simulate the "fog of war" that soldiers in real combat have to be prepared to face. In actual combat, things are likely to get very confusing for any soldier as you have explosions going off, live rounds shooting off everywhere, people shouting all over the place...it can get very hectic and this is something new soldiers have to be prepared for so they can keep a level head and hopefully SURVIVE... The technique is simple yet effective...a drill instructor barks out an order that's deliberately muddled so as to be barely understood yet must be followed exactly TO THE LETTER and more rapidly than any raw recruit could ever be expected to complete, assuming they even know WHAT it is they are supposed to complete. This pretty much guarantees failure out of almost every recruit...but success really isn't the goal here, the goal is to have failures so this next, very CRUCIAL part can kick in... A recruit fails in the task and is IMMEDIATELY zeroed in on by one of the DIs who then starts screaming in the recruits face...as this is happening, like sharks smelling blood, the other DIs close in and start doing the same thing...each one screaming over the other with contradictory orders and insults to the recruit. The effect is pure shock-and-awe as the recruit now has about 5-6 DIs all screaming in their face at the exact same time, some demanding push-ups, some demanding he/she stand at attention, some screaming because the recruit just happened to look towards them, one screaming about how slow the recruit is...it just becomes a mess and it can be real tough to not just break down at that moment... And that's the whole point...it's to show the recruits how woefully unprepared they are for what they are about to be facing should they manage to make it all the way through so they each realize how much they need to pay attention to these DIs over the next several weeks so they can keep a level head should they face a similar situation in combat where instead of the threat of hard physical exercise (smoking), the threat could well be the loss of their life or the life of their fellow soldiers (battle buddies). It's meant to break you out of the independent civilian mindset where it's just all about yourself and into the Army mindset of thinking of your fellow soldiers ahead of yourself... I shudder to think what the Army is going to replace this with as getting out of the entitlement mindset for new soldiers is more important now than ever before...😵

From what I heard the 100 yards is basically like elementary school field day... you show up, the DI’s give you a presentation and demonstration of a march or some kind of task that’s all fanfair and a show; then you get broken up into teams to do these tasks and you work as a group to complete the tasks. Mentally I’m picturing the “hula hoop-arm link” challenges, and scaling a wall as a team. At worst it’ll be a tough-mudder run. Which civilians do for fun all the time, it’s not going to snap them into the “oh f*ck” mindset. Maybe the gas chamber will, but I’ve heard that’s pretty weak right now too, and obviously you can’t wait until you drop them into combat for the shift to occur- it definitely will then, but by then it’s a little bit late.

I didnt realize enemy combatants ask your permission if you're ready to receive their fire like they used to. i.e. "Gentlemen of Fance, perhaps you would care to fire first?" - Lord Charles Hay, Battle of Fontenoy, 1745 I'm no soldier, but I always assumed that basic training, in some sense, was meant to prepare ALL soldiers for battle, for war, however unlikely their MOS would expose them to the possibility of combat. And combat can be absolute HELL, with loud explosions going off around you, sergeants and officers screaming orders at you, and fellow soldiers bleeding and crying out on the ground. Hollywood tends to over dramatize things, but it can and does happen. I don't understand how they expect soldiers to be able to react calmly and efficiently in stressful situations if the drill instructors can't get all up in their grills and scream their heads off, conditioning soldiers even a little to what conditions might be expected in the worst case scenarios. I mean what's next? Do away with the gas chamber because some brass thinks it's not a "team building exercise?"

Sooooo many won’t like this but I couldn’t possibly care less. Not saying this moment isn’t important, just saying there’s way too much emphasis on it. The video makes it seem like none of the other weeks, moments, training means anything. There are so many other moments meant to break down a person for rebuilding. Removing it does not take all of that away....all of the influence, instruction and efforts that drill sergeants put into basic, saying it does is doing them a disservice and discounting them and their work. To say without it, soldiers coming out will be a different breed and missing key aspects of being a soldier begs the question “why do you need anything else if that’s all it takes?” As stated, it was meant to shock voluntold drafted individuals, that’s not who is joining now. For the most part, people joining want to be a good soldier and do well; not feel like a failure off the bat because they were set up to fail. Let’s call it what it is.....it’s an initiation. Just like a sorority or fraternity. And a moment for drill sergeants to sit back and laugh at how scared the knuckleheads were. Anywho, just an opinion....my opinion and you do not have to like it but I have a right to it SO if you want to argue, go argue with someone else..... I have no desire to debate.

So I just finished Basic Training a couple of weeks ago and I saw this first-hand. With no “shark attack,” and the whole COVID “yellow phase,” the whole thing was honestly disappointing. Granted I am pretty old going through all of this (39), so I may have a different perspective than others, but because of these factors there was no real shock when we got there, no real intense physical disciplinary actions, and so there was a HUGE lack of discipline, lack of respect, and lack of “taking this seriously.” It’s been super frustrating.

I didn’t have a shark attack because COVID apparently, but I still felt “the switch.” The Army way of learning and indoctrination is so drawn out and outdated. Respect > fear. So when will the DI’s have to start spoon feeding recruits and wiping their bottoms? Well, to be honest, when I went through Basic in 1964, I didn’t experience a Shark Attack. It didn’t take numerous DIs to scare the crap out of me. SSg Luzio was perfectly capable of doing that all by himself. After experiencing one of his “reprimands,” the last thing we wanted to do was draw the attention of the SDI.

even though this is old news i need to give my informed opinion as someone who has been through a shark attack and studied psychology in things such as discipline, training, team building, etc i feel like Matt's concerns about removing the "shark attack" from basic training stem from a nostalgic view of military tradition and a misunderstanding of how modern warfare and training have evolved. While the shark attack may have held a certain historical significance, its effectiveness in preparing soldiers for the complexities of modern warfare is questionable at best. Matt's assertion that the shark attack is crucial for instilling discipline and mental toughness lacks empirical evidence. In fact, studies in military psychology and organizational behavior have shown that positive reinforcement, clear communication, and team-building exercises are far more effective in fostering resilience, adaptability, and camaraderie. The new approach to the first day of basic training, emphasizing teamwork and trust-building, aligns with these findings. By fostering a sense of shared purpose and mutual respect between recruits and their leaders, the Army can cultivate a more cohesive and effective fighting force. Moreover, Matt's claim that basic training has become "easy" is simply untrue. The standards for physical fitness, marksmanship, and tactical proficiency remain as rigorous as ever. The removal of the shark attack doesn't diminish the intensity or challenge of basic training; it simply replaces an outdated and potentially harmful practice with a more modern and effective approach. Furthermore, the shark attack has been linked to several negative outcomes, including increased stress levels among recruits, a higher likelihood of injuries, and a potential for creating a toxic training environment that discourages potential recruits. By prioritizing positive reinforcement and teamwork, the Army can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment that attracts a wider range of talent. A study by the RAND Corporation found that positive leadership and a supportive training environment are key factors in recruit retention and overall morale. It's also crucial to recognize that today's recruits are different from those of past generations. They are predominantly volunteers who have made a conscious decision to serve their country. This intrinsic motivation eliminates the need for harsh discipline and intimidation tactics like the shark attack. In conclusion, while the shark attack may hold a certain sentimental value for Matt, its removal from basic training represents a positive and necessary step forward. By embracing a more modern, evidence-based approach to training, the Army can better prepare its soldiers for the challenges of the 21st century and foster a more positive and inclusive training environment.

To be honest, Basic Training is a harder version of checking boxes. DS are trying to training your mind first. My DS alwasys say i can teach you how to shoot, but i cant teach you discpline. Which is the biggest problem the Army is facing right now. Lots of trainees are undiscplined, and they dont have the intension to be discpline either. Therefore shark attack is supposed to break you down so they can build you up. If you are mentally wake, you gonna need the shark attack to make you tough, It is a good thing. When bullet start flying over your head at night infiltration On Forge. You will know DS shouting is prepairing you for that. This was definitely a bizarre move, in my opinion, but I have faith in the U.S. Army with or without the shark attack. Our military has gone through so many changes and evolution throughout its history, and despite the differences, it always seemed to come out stronger than ever. One thing is for certain though, we should be glad that we have drill sergeants to make something of recruits. Perhaps I will see them in a slightly different light after I enlist and go through training, but until then, I have a deep appreciation for them and what they do, lol.

I had several shark attacks when going through Phase I at OCS. SFCs, First Sergeants, CPTs, and Majors would light people up particularly if the officer candidate did not make a decision when serving in a position of leadership for a day or two. In those cases, they would shout inches away from your face, "make a decision, sir, making a f*cking decision!" Their goal here was to convey the simple (yet key) leadership idea that if you are a leader and you hesitate to make a choice, people die. "It's better to make a wrong choice than to not make one at all."

I didn't like when the army got rid of the shark attack, when I went through BCT in 2018, during reception, that is what people asked the cadre and drill sergeants about what their BCT experience was like and what it was like going through the Shark Attack some of them told us what their shark attack was like, but they just told us it's part of the process. After going through the shark attack myself and then watching other people go through it, before the army got rid of it, you see why it's important. It breaks you of civilian habits and it creates stress and tests how you handle that stress. Think of it this way, if you can't handle drill sergeants in your face screaming at you, how can you handle yourself overseas with live rounds flying over your head?

Try to go to any school man. Try airborne, air assualt, Sapper, Ranger or go on active duty once. I'm in the guard too but this shark attack stuff happened literally after I'm already 1 month in the guard and I go to basic in January

jacob Fonseca basic training in January, you’re gonna be freezing in red phase. I got 17 months left till my contract ends, I signed a 3 year in highschool, 1/3 my contract was basic training and RSP lol. My motivation isn’t what is used to be, so I really don’t plan on going to airborne school, let alone ranger school. I failed my last APFT, do I care? I won’t be able to make E-4 but I get out before I could get promoted anyway. Not re enlisting. If we went to war with Iran, I might re reenlist. I think they should keep the shark attack, but honestly, it’s a pretty short stint anyway. What state do you live in, your name is familiar.

I just came back from Ft. Benning in august for my basic training before the announcement of the first 100 yards. It caught my whole company off guard when we were only yelled at only a little bit. My company still found ways to implicate the a more toned down shark attack. it was still intense but not at all what i imagine. I was very let down once i’d known we weren’t going to get the shark attack. but you still do not lack discipline and respect for your drill sergeants after first 72 hours.

I grew up in a time when it was okay to spank a kid. Also, if one played football this is similar to hell week. But, training is longer than it has been historically. Also, weren’t the old timers aloud to go home on Friday's during boot camp? (WWII and Korea) Those guys were aloud to go out and get laid and wasted during training. That’s been long taken away.. Also, the guys in Nam had freedoms that soldiers will never have again. With that said, they have raised the recruitment age and a lot of these guys don’t need that kind of treatment.

BMT for me was three months in the 80s and 7 months to get AIT you call it. I think? Before assigned to my unit, which is a reckoning unit, stayed there for 2 Years, they were the best three years of my life But the first days of being drilled was a real wake-up call. Like Hey, your lazy lives are over. Everything is gone softer and softer, and if these peeps has to be deployed, I'm sure there will be some "problems" but you know this already?

Yeah I agree that there should be a fear aspect but like in the sense of "I'm intimidated but also inspired by this person" And I feel like not having the shark attack will just lead to a worse time for people in combat zones/ the "real Army" or even when they reach the later stages of BCT because it wasn't instilled in them to be able to work well under stress and listen to orders without question and work well as part of a team.

Brian Costa Dont lose yourself in the beginning of basic training. My drill sergeants mentally tricked us in so many ways possible. It sucks in the beginning but once you reach black phase, it’s gets a whole lot better. You get to actually go to the motor pool and work with the Tank Commanders and instructors about the tanks and stuff. Always take notes on the tanks and make sure to pay good attention to everything. If you get a good drill sergeant during your basic training portion and they were a tanker, it’s most likely you get to ask questions about tanks and stuff. Also, when you have to qualify with your M4A1 and the M17,(during black phase) just listen to what your drills say and follow the Riflemarksmanship fundamentals. Good luck and I’d like to hear back from you when you finally graduate! Stay on the tank!
