You need to listen to ‘Surf’s Up’ from the Beach Boys and ‘Heroes and Villains’, both from the aborted ‘Smile’ album which was to be the next album after ‘Pet Sounds’. That should give you the Prog prototype you’re looking for. Keep up the good work Justin.

I will join the chorus calling for a "SMiLE" album reaction. I think it ranks with "Pet Sounds" as their best album (I even prefer it slightly). Having said that, this song is glorious. The bass work is incredible and the mind of Brian Wilson was shining bright. Thanks for continuing on this marvelous journey, Justin.

The legendary "Smile" album sessions were fairly progressive (in an Americana sort of way), but that album was never released as intended. Wilson had decided to one-up The Beatles "Revolver" album, and The Beatles generally, but overloaded himself, and ended up suffering a nervous breakdown. I think The Beatles release of Sgt. Pepper's kind of ended Wilson's notions of a direct competition. The sessions were eventually edited down to create "Smiley Smile". [And years later, Wilson worked with the Wondermints to recreate the "Smile" sessions although Wilson has said that it still differed from his original ideas for the album.] I remember a time when it was a big deal to own one of the original test prints of the (unreleased) "Smile" album cover. There are a number of bootleg "Smile" song mixes out there on the Internet - trying to recreate the organization of tracks with various takes of the bootleg recordings. It was sort of a cottage industry.

Brian finally got around to finishing SMiLE in '03/'04 and released it as a solo album. There is a whole documentary on KZitem about that experience. It is not your typical Beach Boys album. In fact Brian went into isolation and had to go through major therapy during it's recording.

If you want to the progressive beach boys listen to the smile sessions compilation in order. Not smiley smile which is a butcherd version that wasn't the original vision for the album. It's a bit of a rougher production but it adds a lot of earthiness to the songs. There is also Wilsons version of smile recorded in the 2000s which has a very clean production ( which i personally dont like that much )and wilsons voice shows its age in alot of spots. Altough its also more complete and thought out in a sense as the songs flow into each other better.

If you want to hear the Beach Boys at their proggiest, the songs for Smile were developed as three extended suites (or "movements") of 10 to 20 minutes each. I'm not really sure which version to recommend, since the original was never completed and the official 2004 recording has its own small flaws (old man Brian vocals, old man Brian production decisions) that don't quite replace what we lost in 1967. But it's absolutely worth hearing at least in one form or another.

Glad you played the mono version - a unique feature of it was the studio control room chatter Brian mixed in. I have the source clip on my Pet Sounds Sessions box set - Brian's talking to one of his brothers about a 35mm camera, and then he switches on the studio mike and shouts "Top, please!". That little bit would result in the Beatles introducing chatter in the ending of their songs, like "I Am The Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields Forever".

Agreed, but better to start with Brian Wilson’s version from 2004. The Beach Boys SMiLE sessions from 1967 sound exactly like what they are- incomplete and disjointed. I break with the purists on this one. The 2004 SMiLE is the masterpiece of Americana the original was intended to be but never was, mainly due to Mike Love’s toxic influence. So it had to wait 35 years for the right moment to shine and eventually became the Rhapsody in Blue of the 21st Century.

When Pet Sounds was released it coincided with the heyday of Pirate Radio in the UK - offshore, permanently anchored ships converted to radio stations. This track got at least as much airplay as any of the other tracks on the album, including God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice. I think the considered opinion of the DJ cognoscenti at the time was that this track would be the next single release from the album, but of course it never happened. It's also interesting to bear in mind when listening to this album that it was originally recorded in mono - an intentional move by Brian Wilson. Some have suggested that this was because Brian who was almost deaf in one ear (allegedly from a beating from his domineering father Murray) and so wanted the rest of the world to hear this as he heard all of his own music. I still find it astonishing that with these aural limitations Brian could still produce the beautiful body of work that he did and do it at such a phenomenal rate. I love the voices chatting in the background during the instrumental break (discussing the use of flash on a camera of all things!) and then Brian shouting "Top!" (meaning rewind the tape) just before the vocals kick back in again. Try to imagine that getting released in today's world of digital purity obsession.

"Insert SMiLE comment here". Also, shout-outs to the Surfs Up, Friends & Sunflower albums. I especially love Friends for its brevity (I think it's like 18 minutes?) and the rise of Dennis Wilson as a songwriter. I also suggest Wild Honey if you want a more R&B sound from the Beach Boys. Not as much complexity, but a lot of songs you can't go wrong with. Especially "Darlin'" and their cover of "I Was Made to Love You".

Hi JP. Dave from London, In The Evening. I agree with you that it's one of the strongest songs on this classic album. The melody and rhythm are infectious, although I would have preferred a bit more up front in the instrumental break. It's perfect pop, but for a 'proggier' side of the band, there's always Good Vibrations or Heroes and Villains (especially the longer version); or try the whole of the Smile sessions, re-recorded in 2004 on Brian Wilson Presents Smile (I saw this tour - an absolute treat).

Smile is an amazing album, Dave. The Brian Wilson 2004 version is fantastic. I know that more recently the original abandoned Beach Boys tapes from 1967 were reconstructed and released as the Beach Boys Smile. I'm not sure whether that matches Brian's 2004 release? After all it was his original vision? Really jealous you saw the Smile tour. We saw Brian with the Beach Boys at Wembley in 2012 with a mix of Brian's touring band and Mike Love's band. The highlight for sure was Brian's songs from Pet Sounds, performed by him on piano, with the others stood around him providing the harmonies.

It's a bummer there's so much misinformation out there about the post Pet Sounds albums. The idea that Brian simply retreated to bed after he decided to scrap Smile is blatantly untrue and makes people wary of diving into the absolutely brilliant music he made during the late 60's and early 70's. I'd put the run from Smiley Smile to Surf's Up up there with the titans of great album runs like Rubber Soul to Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin 1 to Physical Graffiti, and Can't Buy A Thrill to Gaucho; those Beach Boys records are that good.

@@spazimdam The magic of Smiley Smile is in that it's the sound of Brian being comfortable with his music for the first time in at long while. Smile was too much for him to handle, too much grandiosity and not enough focus. He lost track of how all the parts fit together. For Smiley Smile he restructured and rewrote the Smile material on the piano into more workable forms that satisfied him more than the original recordings did. It's the musical equivalent of a sigh of relief and a spiritual rebirth.

The prog album The Beach Boys never made? You really need to hear Surf's Up from start to finish (although I would skip Student Demonstration Time - the worst thing they ever did). And also hear the twin-track pairing of I Went To Sleep and Time To Get Alone, and later, Cabinessence, from the very underrated 20/20 album (...and why wasn't there the obvious remaster with extra material of that album in 2020?) Then move on to the magnificent and completely forgotten album by American Spring - Marilyn and Diane Rovell, the former of whom became Brian's wife (just issued as Spring in the US, as there was a UK band called Spring at the same time). For BB prog, check out to the incredibly beautiful Brian Wilson track Sweet Mountain, which has backing vocals from the Beach Boys, and was another lost Brian Wilson epic which they should have recorded themselves - it would have fitted better on Surf's Up than the execrable Student Demonstartion Time, and led logically and emotionally into Feel Flows. Finally, there was the three-part epic California Saga, on the Holland album - which only ever gets any attention from the crowd-pleasing third segment just titled California, but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

As for the "progressive epic": I think what they've done or would have done on the follow up album Smile is / would have been rather close. Unfortunately, the record didn't happened as planned and they've released Smiley Smile instead. Brian Wilson released a version of Smile in its in 2004 as a solo record (Brian Wilson presents Smile), which is probably the best and closest to "what would have been" version. The songs are portioned in 3 movements with transitions. Especially the second movement (Wonderful/Song For Children/Child Is Father Of The Man/Surf's Up) comes pretty close with about 11 minutes. The other two movements are longer (about 16 minutes and 19 minutes), but maybe a little bit less cohesive, but still really good. Overall, I think "Brian Wilson presents Smile" from 2004 is the best "Beach Boys" release after "Pet Sounds", and probably the most complex/progressive.
@Charlton222

I agree that the official 2004 version of Smile is great but would also say that a lot of Brian's original demos are floating around and, at least in terms of his vocals, is superior to the 2004 version. There are edits you can find of people compiling their own Smile suite from the original material and it's definitely worth going down that rabbit hole and exploring. This is the proggiest that the Beach Boys (or more specifically, Brian Wilson) got. It really is experimental. It sort of reminds me spiritually of Aaron Copland (Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, etc.). It's got that Americana vibe running through it. Musically speaking, there's nothing quite like it. It's so distinct.
