From Wikipedia: "Sloop John B" (originally published as "The John B. Sails") is a Bahamian folk song from Nassau. A transcription by Richard Le Gallienne was published in 1916, and a version was included in Carl Sandburg's The American Songbag in 1927. Since the early 1950s there have been many recordings of the song with variant titles including "I Want to Go Home" and "Wreck of the John B".

Also, there’s a good movie about Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys called Love & Mercy. It’s on Amazon Prime. It goes through Brian’s life when he was a Beach Boy and the Dr. Landy years. Very sad and tragic.

This album was actually kind of early in their careers, but it marked a change in their music. “Here Today” or “I’m Waiting for the Day” are good choices from Pet Sounds.

This album showed their growth as a band. Brian caught a lot of flack ( lead singer Mike Love, his own father) for going in this direction when they wanted him to stick with the stuff that made them famous. He knew singing about cars and the beach was worn out and really showed his musical genius in this album. This album inspired the Beatles to make sgt pepper*

Sloop John B isn't really a good example of a Pet Sounds song. It has that similar Brian Wilson production but it was mainly a single that they had recorded a few months before making this album and their record label made them put the single on the album because that's what you did back then. A Sloop is a type of sail boat. The idea behind the album title is that this is Brian Wilsons "Pet" songs if you will, like it's "his baby". Brian Wilson was inspired by the Beatles album Rubber Soul in the sense of making an album that had a collective theme and overall cohesion between the songs. Traditionally albums used to just be a collection of singles put together along with some filler tracks. The overall theme of the album is centered around young love, growing up and discovering who you really are as a person. The most famous songs from the album are "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows" and "Caroline No" but the whole album is the real treasure. My personal favorite song of all time is from this album and that is "I just wasn't made for these times".

The reason this had such an impact in 60s was Vietnam War was going on & solders would sing I want to go home. Captain please I want to go home. It was all studio. People thought it was about drugs. It's a poem written in 1900s.

This was SO fun. Man I miss my dad, we were close and would hangout a ton like you two seem to do. Also: it’s great to hear insights from newer fans. One of my 1st albums my sister handed down was Beach Boys Greatest Hits, so I grew up with them. However, I NEVER pondered the album cover changes and what they might suggest. Cool for me to rehear and revision the band and songs. I think Paul McCartney declared God Only Knows to be the most beautiful song ever written. Worth a listen. I saw a breakdown of the song suggesting a baritone horn would double bass lines and maybe they used it to punch and round the low vocals, too? Subbed and looking forward to binging content!

sheriff john stone ! lol the song stems from an old Bahamian folk song about the Sloop John B. In 1647, there was a colony in the Bahamas where a Welshman named John Bethel lived. He built a sloop, which is a 16 foot vessel that carries a crew of five, and he named his sloop, yep, you guessed it, “The Sloop John B.” The Sloop John B.

The Beach Boys Christmas album is an absolute classic, and you MUST throw it into your holiday collection. I dont think that you are listening very good to the lyrics. The first thing that you mentioned about sheriff John Jones is actually sheriff John Stone so it rhymes with "I wanna go home". Then tyhe next part that you were mentioning about corn is when they sing " he ate all of his grits". You are absolutely right about the sound effects in the song.
