This is not your ordinary limited edition premium performance trim model.
Honda introduced “Type-R” in 1992 with the JDM only ‘92-‘95 Honda NSX-R. The mid-engine all-aluminum sports car featured extensive weight reduction & a track-oriented suspension with only 483 NA1 / 152 NA2 units sold.
In 1995, Honda poured their racing heritage engineering into a more attainable model: the Integra Coupe (DC2 chassis) & Sedan (DB8 chassis). The “Type-R” badging was essentially sold as purposeful race cars when the NSX-R was produced and sold, but in 1995 the JDM only Integra Type-R was marketed to a wider market: 24,860 DC2 / 5,135 DB8 units sold between 1995 & 2001.
In 1997, Honda graced us young sport-compact car enthusiasts with the Acura Integra Type-R unveiled in the U.S. market in 1997, 1998, 2000, & 2001 with much more limited production numbers of 320 (1997), 1,002 (1998), 1,355 (2000), & 1,173 (2001) units sold in America.
The Integra Type-R in Japan was a much lighter variant than that offered in the U.S. by about 157 lbs due to lesser safety requirements in Japan. Overall the major differences between the Type-R & a standard Integra included more than one may realize which makes them unique collector cars today:
“Extensive modifications in the Integra Type R included a hand-built engine with hand-polished intake and exhaust ports, high-compression pistons, revised intake system, a retuned exhaust and a helical limited-slip differential. Chassis modifications included suspension, tire, wheel and brake upgrades, and the body received additional bracing and seam welds for added strength and rigidity. Weight reduction measures included the removal of sound insulation, a thinner windshield, lightweight wheels, and the removal of the air conditioning and audio systems.” - Source: Hondanews.com
