When using Lace as a finilizing last in a chain limiter (at least in my opinion) I recommend setting it up at the very start of the mastering session and "master" into Lace so you can compensate (if needed of course) for that high mids/high end boost with EQ moves ect. On some material it "eats" midrange bit more that other limiters (I would keep that in mind as well). Since it quicky becomes pumpy, sometimes adding a clipper before Lace (even that it has it's own clipping) helps too (especially when the crest factor is not that great. But having said that I found that Lace has its own characteristic sound no matter what mode you're using. So that can work for or against the song. It's definitely not all around go to limiter, works on most material but adds it's own flavour even with preamp turned off. That's my findings after 2 days of demoing it. Looking forward to hear others opinions. Thanks a lot.

Ok, after spending few more hours demoing Lace and comparing it side by side with other limiters I came to the conclusion that it has quite pushed, hyped sound which is (sorry) geared more towards younger customer (hyped punchy enchanced mids/high mids). The good thing is that Lace is a lively, 3D limiter. Its biggest problems are first of all it distorts bit quicker than other limiters, becomes "pumpy" bit quicker and most importantly when having True Peak off (True Peak works on not such much of a material) it has overs. Summing up, it's good but it definitely needs some improvements. Hope Acustica Audio will address those issues.
@fredtimothy940

Thank you for covering this plugin. As I consider their quest of preserving low end punch, it brings to mind a related problem of mid/high frequencies washing up between the main beats. I would love to see development in the area of Expanders. Preceding a limiter with an expander ‘could’ be a good way to compensate for the kind of dynamic reversal limiters can cause, where the rests between beats wash up louder than the main beats themselves. But sadly most all expanders are so mathematically primitive they make the audio brittle or jittery. We need more natural sounding expansion that can handle low end smoother.

I do have Weiss DS1 MK3 bundle. I do know it quite well and I've been using it for few years. I'm after comparing Lace to Weiss limiter on different materials. In every case Lace sounded more natural (if limiter can sound natural), was preserving stereo image better, (more 3D), sounded more open. As much as I love Weiss stuff, this Lace limiter is way more transparent, more 3D sounding. Like it better than Weiss on pretty much every mix I tried it on during my initial tests. Weiss do have it's own focused sound.

Hi David, I have two unrelated questions and this first one could even be the subject for a new video or for the Q&A´s. I noticed you almost didn´t touch the LOOKAHEAD function on the plugin, I never really fully understood this function, if you can make plugins ´lookahead´ the signal so to react before the audio event happens, why would you ever want this function disabled or at zero? Second question is about one of the tracks, I can read Nova Melodious on the file but couldn´t find anything when googling or on YT. Is that an unreleased new artist? Thanks
@mixbustv
6 ай бұрын
Yes lookahead means the plugin sees the signal before it gets processed. All brickwall limiters are lookahead, that is why brickwall limiters were born digital, analog cannot "look ahead" and always has "an" attack time no matter how fast. On this one you can decide how far it'll look ahead to improve (it depends) the peak limiting process. Zero is still lookahead in a brickwall limiter, and you cannot really "disable" it that's how they are and operate. If you ask why wouldn't you want this on any plugin (and I'm confident you're not asking this but just to make sure) you would NOT want to have this on compressors for examples. Compressors are there to change the envelope, enhance attack more than control the attack, they are not there to be used as limiters, limiters are there to be used as limiters. The song is this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lKR8umSNpaeobJwsi=OPrns1DamfQRqNDx
@pauloalxrod2
5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the explanation, I understand the function a bit better now! Just as a side note regarding lookahead in compressors, I use Pro-C2 quite a lot and that has a lookahead function which to my understanding so far, is useful for sidechaining, particularly in external sidechaining (ducking the bass when the kick hits being the best example). Is this an exception when it might be useful on a compressor? Also, the track I was referring to is the hip hop one, starting exactly at 16:10 . I realize it may be a video edit issue where the file it looks like you were choosing it's named Nova Melodius but then you play a Hip Hop track, which explains maybe why I couildn't find it through Google/KZitem. Sorry to ask but really like that track and I tried it on my own first so I wouldn't have to ask you here. Cheers for everything, even if you don't reply to this comment @tv

@tv David, i think it's not just disk space at all, cause all the huge bloatware generates much more cpu load, poor user experience and now the ice on the cake ? that "free" upgrades are definitely gone... yes cause in reality they now want to force you to buy latest core tech instead of updating many of the most popular "older" products (they COULD if they wanted to), so they put a new name or an "ultra" in the plugin name, a new fancy interface, and ask your money for what should have been added for free as still stated in their policy. (just a hint: midnight, 3 fairchild clones that could have been added into Aquamarine for free). i have to buy againg what is almost fully already "inside", in SO MANY products that now are deliberately left behind without updating the core tech from YEARS, in order to sell new stuffs. Just honestly change the policy telling customers to pay a fee to get the latest tech... but they didn't, and now so many plugins and money has been wasted supporting them. Actually you can't really use "older" core plugins on newer Macs where you jokingly getting even more horrible performance then before! pardon my little rant, if too "off topics" just delete me, but i had to clarify that with AA there's a lot more that "wasted space". 👍great video as always

In most cases Lace sounded more transparent, more natural (if limiter can sound natural, but anyway), less "forced" and was preserving the stereo image a lot better. I know that it was paid promotion video so I was bit skeptical but this limiter is amazing. I only scratched the surface as the learning curve is deep.

Professional engineers have been using Oxford Sonnox Limiter and still will in future. If you want loud and really clean - Sonnox!

@@mixbustv lol. Makes sense if the industry is just about plugging plug ins ;) Surely it is the craftsman duty to adjust the nuisance depending on programme content. Or are we basically saying this is a one trick pony limiter that’s only suitable for a small range of genres?

All Acoustica Audio mastering engineers here 🤣 Sorry Fanboys, there’s nothing special about that plug-in. there have been too limiters out there for a while now.

@@queenpurple8433AA = Acustica Audio. I mean the general behavior of compression by its dynamic convolution solution or whatever. Something is wrong with the micro timing. I have many AA plugins and often love the “boxtone” and EQs, but the compression has disappointed me every time. Just my opinion, nothing more. :)

Who wants to audition 40 limiter algorithms every song though?! Make some decisions for us and maybe give us 5-7 algos?
@mixbustv

Who audition 40 limiters? Who audition 40 anything? You don't learn as you mix, you learn in your free time so you know what to use when you actually mix (or master) and you maybe try 3 before you find the right one. I have 20 analog compressors you think I try them all on every track before deciding which one to use where?

Eh no lol some plug-ins are already better at the things plug-ins are better for, which is not and never will be what analog is better at. Ever.

The sleaziest practice: Clickbait Titles which appear, at first glance, to make a grand pronouncement (but are qualified - hopefully, unnoticeably - by a question mark). Insults viewers' intelligence - as though they don't see what's going on.

The intended effect being: I appear to be saying something - namely that this is (or might be) "The Best _____." But then, nothing of the sort, as I disclaim it with this question mark (so I'm off the hook); but I've grabbed your attention through giving a false impression.

@PhatLvis it is what it is, you've gotta play the KZitem game if you're a creator and it's part of your income. If you don't catch attention then you don't earn. I've seen worse 'clickbait' titles but this one is really just a question. Don't let it bother you so much mate

Why would anyone get anything to set up cameras, lights, filming, editing, testing, consulting, showcasing a new plugin for a company that launches it, all that in a professional studio in LA, and I get picked because I actually know what I'm doing and how to explain things to people so, why would anyone be compensated for their time, knowledge and skills, that'd be absolutely crazy!
