I started watching your videos just before DMing my first module game of Wild Beyond the Witchlight. I need to preface this by explaining that we use discord for voice and in the server I made I gave each player a character journal to do whatever they wish with. Anytime we can't have a session I propose an optional writing prompt for my players to explore backstory and other fun activities. This video has encouraged me to give them the prompt "What would you like to see happen during our adventure? How do you enjoy DnD? As a player what are your strengths and weaknesses?" I try to communicate as transparently as I can as a DM and I thought this video was super helpful to help guide me to not only focus on my player's characters but my players as well. Thanks Bob!!

Remaining 5% gang! I wanted to personally thank you for this video. As a small KZitem creator focused on DnD, I've found that the high energy, or at least highly edited content, does bring in more viewership. But like you said, I don't naturally go that fast or that hard. So I include slow chapter breaks, slowing my verbal tempo and doing videos that are just talking head to camera. That balance makes it more sustainable, especially with a full time job! Still learning that balance though. Excited to see what you do next with the job change!

I usually don't find silences awkward. I thoroughly enjoy them! Once, I drove my parents in law with my wife (then, girlfriend) to a mall. And while her dad and I looked for a parking place, she and her mother left the car to go seeking what they were going to buy, in order to gain some time. It took us like 3 minutes in which her dad and I remained completely silent, before we found where to park. Later that night, I told my girlfriend: "Honey, I think your dad and I made such a connection! It was so awesome!".

So, I doubt you'll even see my comment, but I'm preparing a campaign that I'll be DMing, and I haven't DM'ed in about 6 years. Your channel has been helping me get back into being a DM quite a lot, and is one of the only D&D advice channels that I'm subscribed to. Your videos are informative, entertaining, peaceful, and all the advice you give is kind, useful, and enthusiastic. I prefer a less overwhelming style as opposed to the fast, loud, and overly energetic style which you mentioned in this video. Your authenticity is refreshing, and it enhances the impact of the messages and education you impart through your videos. I really appreciate your channel and what you're doing here, and I'm thrilled that you're going to be sharing more of your valuable time with us, your subscribers.

Hell yeah! Glad to see you coming to the scene full time. You reminded me of Matt Colville before you ever mentioned Matt Colville. So many D&D resources online are about "fixing" things - as if D&D is broken. I think the "how to fix" D&D content can really lead DMs astray and get them in a negative mindset, fixing problems that aren't present at their table. You, Matt, Satine, and Dael talk about D&D with positivity and wonderment. And that's why I subscribed. Keep being yourself, you are most definitely on the right path.
@BobWorldBuilder
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, I've definitely slipped into the "fixing" approach before, and I'll say that it really works on titles on thumbnails, but I definitely aim to present my ideas in the videos just as fun things you could try, rather than saying I somehow came up with a better idea than a team of game designers :P

I do appreciate this focused talking method and endeavor to authenticity (of creator to your content). For me personally i find it much easier to follow the message/topic. The very active visuals have their place and audience but i personally find it hard to hear what he was saying, the visuals just grabbed my attention and my ears couldn't keep up with the split attention. I gotta admit that I like simple, straightforward videos because I generally don't watch most of the video. I listen to it while doing something else, then look down at the screen when something is said which seems to require visual aid. I don't sit there and give it my undivided attention for the full duration. I would liken it to D&D. You don't always need a full-up, detailed map with minis. Sometimes just describing it, or scratching a quick map so as to avoid constantly re-describing a location, is both narratively sufficient and advantageous from the perspective of actually playing the game.

I shared your passion for outdoor education and was a member of AEE, Association of Experiential Education, for about 8 years. This was from the early 90s until 2001. I've been a D&D player since 77, and I found out working with kids on initiatives and tasks in the outdoors really improved my game by describing the expressions, emotions, frustrations, excitement, and environments for npcs or players during a game. I could describe npcs, monsters, and beings that connected better because I could convey emotional content in a better way that connected with the players better. Excellent video with great incite and purposes!

I appreciate this video. I certainly prefer the longer form, thoughtful, less flashy D&D content (like Matt Colville's Running the Game, the DM Lair, JNJ Tabletop, and others). So very much looking forward to more videos like this from you. And such important advice about vulnerability (I don't know if you've read Brene Brown's "Daring Greatly", but it talks about the false conflation of vulnerability with weakness, and how it is actually the ultimate strength). Good luck with this new step, and I for one will watching all of your videos, start to finish :)

I see what you did there. In all seriousness, Bob: This was an exceptional video lesson. Thank you for sharing your feelings, opening up, and helping us all connect the dots in our own games and lives. You continue to surprise me with great content and lessons that apply to so much more than just D&D and RPGs in general. And, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Please keep doing what you're doing for the community!!! 💜

Great video. “I can always go back to being a shepherd, the boy thought. I learned how to care for sheep, and I haven’t forgotten how that’s done. But maybe I’ll never have another chance to get to the Pyramids in Egypt.” Don't be scared of changing career path, you can always go back :)

Thank you for the encouragement! I've been trying to remind myself of that lately. I was doing okay before I got in KZitem, so even if for some reason this were to come tumbling down, things would work out :) Very glad to have your support!

To add, as you say in your video. This is a more sustainable way to approach your vids. I honestly just unsubbed to one of those fast paced high energy dnd channels. I just didnt have the energy to combat that over stimulus everyday so i stopped wanting to watch. I liked them at first and nothing against the creator but i just didnt want to watch them. As opposed to this where it feels like a colleague is just calmy explaining a thing that he is passionate about. Great work, sorry to hear about your fun job, but im excited to watch more of your vids.

I will continue to support as much as I can and I look forward to hearing and seeing what you have in store for us next time! Also yay wedding!!!

I just have to say that, as someone with ADHD, this video was incredibly easy to follow. Your way of presenting is INCREDIBLY human. You have that gentle way of speaking where it feels like you're speaking to someone in front of you, and not a camera. Matt Colville (and this isn't at all a criticism of him) feels much more like a "presenter" in his videos, but yours feels feel like you're tutoring a friend on a complex issue. I love it!

This will definitely help me in my D&D game and my job as a teacher. Thanks for the great advice. I also greatly appreciate the tone of your video, from the start that's what I liked the most, your calm voice. I also love Matt Colville's channel but it is sometimes over-stimulating and there's nos way I could listen to more than 2 of his videos in a row ^^

@@BobWorldBuilder haha I would say he's still talking pretty fast, but I get that feeling because I'm not a native speaker of English. I have to say I'm pretty proud that I'm even listening to his videos without subtitles, that would have been impossible a few years back. Yay!

it's really important for presenters, video creators and DMs to realise that not everyone on the internet or playing has the attention span of a gnat(!). some people (maybe especially neurodiverse people like myself) find the constant jumpiness of videos from people like DnDShorts (awesome though he is) almost over-stimulating and it becomes hard to take in his message. appreciating your gentle and absorbing presentation style bob! it takes time to inspire wonder and curiosity...

Yeah, I've been focusing on that style a little too much. Personally I like watching and producing a variety of styles of videos!
