Hey Rusty, what poundages do you put down for this mix? I know you said 50/50, but i cant find any lb/ac reccomendations when planted in mixes. I am looking at doing 2 separate 1/2 acre patches of this mix this spring. Also, I'm assuming these are like other clovers and small legumes in that they should be planted as shallowly as possible....?

Hi Isaac, I plant 10 lbs vetch with 10 lbs of Alyce per acre. Over the following years whichever plant is better suited to the soil type will tend to take over. I just scratch the soil surface as soon as dry enough in the spring and in reseeds. Also appreciate I drill the seed in. You may want to go a little heavier if planting by another method just be sure soil surface is clean.

Thanks for the video. I’m looking to try this out in east feliciana parish, I’ve read it prefers somewhat moist conditions. Do you find this to be true? Our feild are sandy loam and clay and can get pretty dry during the summer months.

Welcome, yes vetch prefers moisture which is why mixing with alyce clover helps as both are compatible with vetch doing better in slightlu wetter conditions and alyce being more drought tolerant

We planted joint vetch last year. It was outstanding. Deer feeding in the plots day and night. Question, if the vetch stops being a productive food source after the first frost, do you make sure to have other fall plantings such as clover ready to take over? Would it be wrong to plant all your plots with joint vetch and nothing else? Or split each plot into 50% vetch and 50% clover mix?

Glad the vetch worked for you. As a guiding principle I try to always have something growing year round for the deer. Several of my vetch fields have crimson clover in them . The crimson is done as the vetch starts to sprout so I just mow and maybe lightly scratch to release the vetch. I always have plants that compliment the growing habits of vetch so I would not go with only vetch plots. For example next to one vetch field I have a clover field with red clover and Durana and chicory which I also drill small grain to. This provides year round grazing. Hope this helps

Thank you,Mr. Baker, for the video. I noted you planted the first field in May. Is this pretty standard for central Louisiana? Or is that period flexible due to conditions - rain, drought, etc.?

I usually plant late April thru mid May depending on climatic conditions. Vetch can be slow to germinate and get started but with adequate moisture once started does well.

Hi Sydney, the planting date is variable depending on weather conditions. You can plant this mix later than most as long as adequate moisture is there.

Be sure to use the variety Aeschynomene. It's commonly called joint vetch or deer vetch.

Hi Rusty, good video. I'm looking for this clover but am not sure how it's spelled. Would it be Ali's, or Alyce, or may be Alsike clover. They all sound pretty much the same

Hi Tom, Its Alyce Clover which technically isn't a real clover but it is quality deer food. I plant it in the spring 50%50% with joint vetch as the two are very compatible. Good luck and happy to help if further questions.

Been calling every seed store from Central to North Texas looking for joint vetch. Any tips for where to get vetch seed?

Just looked and Hancock Seed carries it. Look for it as aeschynomene, its official name. May try asking for that locally before paying Hancock freight from Fla. though they are a very good resource
