I'm glad to see Celtic Frost getting the love they deserve. Morbid Tales was - and still is - one hell of a punishing listen. Fast, loose, dirty, and with D-beat kicks. Very Motörhead, very Venom, and an approach that Sodom would also become great at down the line!

Piledriver rules! Living Death is a nice surprise. Merciful Fate should be there though. I would put Anthrax as a very close 2nd to Metallica. I always thought Metal Church's first album came out in '85. But great to see them ranked so high. Maybe you should do a list of nothing but the greatest EP's in Metal history. Razor was raw but I love Armed and Dangerous. Haunting the Chapel may be short but every second of it is pure brutality. Dark and demonic. A precursor to Hell Awaits. Slayer at their most primal. And 1984 saw 2 of the most important and legendary bands in metal release their heaviest albums ever. Priest and Maiden put out Defenders of the Faith and Powerslave respectively. While not Thrash these 2 albums showed that they could still compete with the most extreme metal coming out. And if not for Priest and Maiden and the great Metal and Rock before them, Thrash would not exist. Let us not lose sight of that. Listen to Powerslave front to back and tell me most of those riffs aren't fast and thrashy! In my opinion IRON MAIDEN is the greatest band of all time. Their first 5 albums are all classics. Rank them in any order and you would not be wrong. I wet off base there but had to put '84 into perspective. One more thing: Venom are always overlooked. At War With Satan was their 3rd great album in a row. Way ahead of their time. The title track alone at 22 minutes plus is remarkable for an extreme Metal band. Venom fucking rules!

Yeah Mercyful Fate ain't really a thrash metal band, sure they delivered some rather evil heavy metal but the bands on this list is thrashier than them. But if I do the best metal albums of 1984 it will be on it, that's for sure!

Ride the lightning is undoubtly one of the greatest thrash records if not one of the greatest albums of all time, there is no filler on this album, the atmosphere is dark and cold, the guitar tones are frosty, also slayer's live undead and haunting the chapel are amazing, listening to chemical warfare and haunting the chapel you can see bits of reign in blood and south of heaven in it.

I just heard it for the first time yesterday.The 2 first songs are kinda weak imo. They sound just like something off Bonded by Blood but Exodus did it better imo. The rest was pretty good.

1. haunting the chapel. 2. War and pain. 3. Morbid Tales. 4. Emperors return. 5. Metal Church. 6. Fistful of Metal. 7.Gates to Purgatory. 8. Metal Inquisition. 9. Ride the Lightning. 10. Violence and force. BUT: If Dont break the Oath qualifies as Thrash or speed, than that would be 3rd place and everything else would get bumped down one. And some people consider Motorhead thrash.

Cool list again. RIDE THE LIGHTNING was so far ahead of the underground competition of the time, considering most thrash bands didn’t even their first album at that point and Metallica released a masterpiece. It’s common to knock Metallica these days (I liked your video about just about all thrash bands selling out, for perspective), but no matter anyone’s opinion on them today, there’s no denying their influence in the 80’s, how many bands followed them and just how damn good they were. I’m glad you gave SENTENCE OF DEATH some love. Even though in the long run I prefer Sodom the best, there’s no denying the awesomeness of early Destruction. Technically and songwriting wise, the we’re ahead of the other bands from Germany in my opinion. Glad you at least mentioned Slayer if not putting them in the list. 13 minutes maybe, but a perfect thirteen minutes. On a similar note, you gave honorable mention to AT WAR WITH SATAN, but Venom’s 3 song WARHEAD single/EP is close to HAUNTING THE CHAPEL. Three incredibly awesome songs.

Yes I've gotten some shit from Metallica fan boys for some of my videos but I hold 'em high as everyone can see now. :) Yes if there was a track or two more on haunting it would have been there in my top 5. probably.

I count myself as a Metallica fan boy (for the most part), but with the exception of DEATH MAGNETIC, don’t consider anything past the 80’s album wise as close to thrash. I enjoy most of the music nonetheless. I’m fine with people not liking post 80’s Metallica, but hate it when it gets to the point where thrash fans don’t acknowledge their 80’s material. It’s the equivalent to ignoring Sabbath for metal in general.
@garystarkey726

@@metaldams78 i agree but how are you with many metal fans these days hating metallica so much they want to erase their incredible 80's domination and give dave mustaine credit for kill em all. its called dave em all. unbelievable, the metallica hatred fueled lies that have infested the metal community. If mustaine had remained in metallica kill em all would not have been half as good and god knows what ride would have been like. Anyway im with you, Metallica's legacy should remain regardless off their miss steps starting from the black album. Loads=eeek.
@metaldams78

You hit the nail on the head, Gary. No doubt Mustaine contributed very early on, but not to the point where it was all him and Hetfield was a nobody. They also did plenty of great stuff without Mustaine in the 80’s. It’s cool for me if people think Metallica had a classic era and non classic era - like just about any band with a long career. It’s the idea of discarding their 80’s output out of spite that bothers me.
