Fun fact: when I moved from Holland to California in autumn '83 I went to the same high school as Baloff's girlfriend. Her name was Liz and she made almost all the flyers for the thrash shows at Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley (see: Murder in the Front Row book). We became friends and she told me about all the shows going on, gave me cassette of Bonded By Blood before it was released which she made me swear I wouldn't copy. Baloff came to her high school graduation and managed not to kill any posers for one evening.

Killing is My Business is a fucking masterpiece, production value aside. I mean, Show No Mercy doesn't sound great but it made #1 on his list, and rightfully so!!. Another ground breaking masterpiece. It sounded like nothing before it!!! Plus SOD was such an intense thrash album, it can't be ignored, especially can't be put behind Razor, Agent Steel and the other obviously not thrash albums on the list. I will go to the grave screaming Fistful of Metal and Killing is My Business are those respective bands best albums. As a teenager spreading the gospel and waiting with bated breath for every new release back in the early days of thrash (after Kill ' Em All set the standard), there were few albums that you didn't hit stop on the cassette player/turntable after investing $10 based on the band name/album cover! Back in the day, that was all we had to go on!! Also, the urge to find the next "thing" in thrash was a feeling I can only compare to judging hot young women on their looks alone only to be disappointed over and over somewhere between the moment they spoke and when they said ??!!DO WHAT!!?? when you had them naked and wet!!! The guys today have no idea what we had to put up with when asking for deviant sex acts!!! But I still think Ruthless Metal is the best site for thrash content/opinion. But I will ALWAYS BELIEVE EARLY 80'S THRASH WAS A MAGICAL TIME RIGHT UP THERE WITH CHUCK BERRY AND ELVIS AND THE BIRTH OF ROCK AND ROLL!!! BANG YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE STAGE!!!

I think a lot of it has to do with the impact these albums had when we were teens in the 80s. That's why Hell Awaits is my number one. Another excellent list Ruthless; as usual my list varies somewhat from yours. Here are my picks: 1. Slayer - Hell Awaits - this for me was Slayer at their peak. It's without a doubt their most evil album. I don't know what was going on during the recording of this masterpiece, but there were some truly malevolent forces driving Mr. Araya, Mr. Hanneman, Mr. King, and Mr. Lombardo. I've talked to older heshers and the stories they've told me all coincide; there are more extreme forms of metal that came after Slayer, but NONE of them have produced more violent shows than Slayer. In particular the shows for this diabolic record were of legendary brutality. I have a hard time picking favorite tracks off this as it's all killer no filler, but if a knife were held to my throat, I'd choose At Dawn They Sleep and Hell Awaits. Best of 85 hands down. 2. Exodus - Bonded By Blood - this album is the epitome of thrash. When I think of the quintessential Bay Area thrash record, this is the first one that comes to my mind. This was the best release from Exodus and made me lament the fact that I didn't get to see Paul Baloff unleash more of his feral savagery on subsequent albums. Synchronicity is real and this is proof positive of it. Everything came together to produce a seminal, landmark recording that preserves a period in metal history that will never be repeated. Best tracks for me are Bonded By Blood followed by And Then There Were None. 3. Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion - My second favorite Celtic Frost record is nothing short of brilliant. The magic was flowing through this one and the H.R. Giger cover was part of its spell. Sadly, it wasn't until Celtic Frost did Monotheist that I got another taste of the alchemy present on this wicked delight. Favorite tracks are Circle of the Tyrants and Dawn of Megiddo. 4. Destruction - Infernal Overkill - My favorite Destruction album period. Full stop. When I think of records that define German thrash, this, Persecution Mania, Pleasure to Kill and The Upcoming Terror are immediately what springs to mind. This Teutonic tornado takes no prisoners and puts listeners on a whirlwind journey from start to finish. Standout tracks are Tormentor and Bestial Invasion.

Kudos for the Watchtower record getting some love. They were always such an overlooked band, even when compared to other proggy Thrash bands like Voivod, Sadus, and Coroner. It's a shame Kreator and Onslaught didn't make the bill this time, although, to be fair, they were both fairly 'cult status' bands at the time. Onslaught were always great in my opinion.

Yeah, Watchtower was first and they probably inspired everyone from Voivod to Deathrow and Vektor. Both Kreator and Onslaught were close to making it but 1985 was insane. 🤘🏻

@@RuthlessMetalYT I love these videos, as we all get to come together and geek out over the bands we love, even those that never broke through commercially to the point where they could even afford keeping their bands together, let alone touring and recording. Today we'd almost kill one another to go see bands like Hirax, Exhumer, or Cancer playing a gig. I agree with 1985 having been insane - '85 to about '93 had AWESOME Thrash records! 1986 is gonna be one mean son of a bitch! I'm already throwing Morbid Visions and Obsessed By Cruelty out as viable options!

I love how Spreading The Disease had the actual Doc Marten tread pattern on the dude's boots, we all were wearing those back then! The 80's thrash scene was so fresh, to fans, no bands sounded alike like the clowns told us they did. Thrash metal was such a great scene to be part of. Those few years were nuts and perfectly segued into the death metal and grindcore scene. As Mustaine stated - Metal up your ass!

There weren't that many Megadeth supporters among the metal fans at my high school in '85; I can only think of one off of the top of my head. Many of us considered them thrash because of dave mustaine's connection to Metallica, but because they sounded so punk, most dismissed them, and pointed out how they were so different from Metallica that it was proof that he had no influence on Metallica's sound. You could tell how much he pissed off Metallica fans with his war of words in magazines like Circus. I know that my view on Megadeath has changed, but I wonder how my friends from back then feel about him now? Spreading the Disease was my favorite thrash album that year, but Razor, Celtic Frost, Overkill, and Kreator are pretty memorable. I think that was the year that Anthrax opened for Kiss. I thought that they were the most energetic band that I'd ever seen. My future brother-in-law took my sister to the concert, and she said that they were, "cute because they were chasing each other around the stage". Anthrax and cute are still one of the most incongruent pairings that I've ever heard.

There’s no denying the greatness of “Bonded By Blood”, though being kept in the can did hurt its impact in the thrash metal scene. If this had come out in 1984, Metallica would’ve shat in their pants, so for me the BEST thrash metal album of 1985 is hands down “Hell Awaits”, with Exodus really, really close behind. As for the other bands, they’re all great, specially the fantastic (though rather crude sounding), “Evil Invaders” by Razor. Agent Steel “speed Metal”?!?!! The song you put, “Bleed For The Gods” is pure thrash mayhem! Yes, some songs to tread in power metal/trad metal territory due to cyriis high range vocal style, but Agent Steel is steel 100% thrash. I can’t say the same for Nasty Savage. I liked them, I really do, but they kind of got into thrash for their looks rather than their music. Their debut has absolutely NO fast songs at all. Sure, their songs were kind of “slow” thrash, but in all honesty I would’ve put Kreator’s debut, “Endless Pain” instead. Not really my fave Kreator album, but still way more thrash than Nasty Savage. Same with Watch Tower. Their production, I think, hindered their musical impact with a “too loud” bass. Still, they were Thrashier than Nasty Savage. In their stead, I’d put Dark Angel’s sadly overlooked debut, “We Have Arrived”. Sure, it ain’t no “Darkness Desceneds” but in the same way “Fistful Of Metal” is NO “Among The Living”, right? “We Have Arrived” is full of great tunes like the original version of “Merciless Death” and the incredible, “Welcome To The Slaughterhouse”. Though I love Celtic Frost, their inclusion looked forced because, “To Mega Therion”’ is a very eclectic album. Overkill was also honing their style on “Feel The Fire”, but Anthrax was pretty close in nailing their definitive style. “Gung-Ho” definitely Can crush many of the bands on this list. Finally, it was nice to see Mike from Destruction as a riff master. When I met him years ago I told him how big of an influence he was on me. He turned out a great guy! All in all a very nice list! Well done!

Yes, I think Agent Steel is more thrash than speed, but if I don't say that they have some speed in them, I will get messages about that too. :) But it's not about the aggressiveness of the albums, then death / thrash should be the best style of thrash which I don't think it is, there were some good albums in that field too like in any other subgenre of thrash. :) We have Arrived was kinda weak though.
