The most recent Victorian novel I read was a short story collection of detectives by L.T. Meade. I loved it. She was a brilliant writer. Someone told me that she dictated her stories in de morning, corrected the proofs in the evening and it was sent to the printer. She was the Victorian grand lady of the pulps. I think a lot of pulp writers are underrated today.

I only knew Sabine Baring-Gould as the author of a couple of hymns. Had no idea he was a novelist!

What a delightful video today. Of all on the list, I would love to get my hands on The Heir of Redcliff and Chantry House. These two books are so difficult to come by. All-in-all your list of Novel's You've Never Read was indeed a lovely secret exposed.

I’ve only read Sylvias Lovers out of these - there is so much I love about it but so much sadness! That means I have lots of goodies to look forward too- Grania especially really appeals.

Maybe I will read The Little Lame Prince to my children, too! It’s in my Victorian Fairy Tales collection, I think. ♥️ I’ve only read Man & Wife and In the Roar of the Sea on this list, so yay! So many to check into! Thanks, Kate! 🥰

I will add all of these wonderful books to my Tbr list! I know of a Victorian author who has written so many books but I don’t hear much if anything about her these days. The author is Isabella Macdonald Alden. Most of her books are considered Christian Children’s stories and referred to as the Pansy books. I have one of her old books published in 1882 called “Five Friends” that is beautifully illustrated. It was given to my Great Grandmother in 1886 on her 14th birthday.

Years ago, a friend came back from a trip to London with same Wouldbegoods novels for me. She couldn't believe I had never heard of E. Nesbit. Since then I've read several of Nesbit's books and really like the novels with fanatastical elments (Arden Court for its's psychological insight and "The Story of the Amulet for an unforgettable scene in the British Museum). If you haven't read it already you might want to take a look at A.S. Byatt's "The Children's Book" which is based on the life of E. Nesbit. Everyone talks about "Possession," but I much preferred "The Children's Book."

Just read The Perpetual Curate and Miss Marjoribanks for Victober (having previously read the ones before in the Carlingford Chronicles, and Hester). I really enjoyed them, and loved the stories and the characters. I think Mrs Oliphant writes good absorbing books that rattle along. I think we can become too obsessed (or maybe even a bit snobby) over what is 'the best' Victorian literature, and ignore other good books/authors.

Now I absolutely can't wait to get to Man and Wife! I'm finishing up David Copperfield and hoping to move to that next. I'll have to look into the Nesbit book. So far she has always been a bit my kids.

@@katehowereads I wasn't sure what to expect with David Copperfield, but I have absolutely been living it. I really enjoy how much of a mixed bag it's been as far as styles. One moment saying a character's hand felt like a cold fish in the dark 😂 and the next making you tear up. If you put Man and Wife above The Woman in White, then I cannot wait for the thrill.
