I m just up in Vancouver Canada, The terrain and weather is literally the same for us both. I ve carried a 3"x 1" Buck sharpener EDC, rough and fine sided the last few years. Your way is safer, I carry a and use my knives a lot and agree with frequent touchups and stropping, I also remove the burr by lightly drawing it over some wood to remove any that s formed. We both deal with wet environments more than most I d say, I ve fairly recently switched from 1095 steel knives and gone stainless steel. I went stainless in my hunting rifles years ago as I just got tired of fighting the rust war . I m Useing a CRK Nyala and Spydie Native 5 both in S35VN mostly now S30v is fine, zdp189 rusts around any laser engraveing I find. S35VN seems to be good cutters, Easy to Sharpen and no rust issues yet. How has your exp been overall with rust in our climate and salt water conditions ? It is the Bane of my existance 8-)) well, at least a reall piss off. Take care, and great channel

Great video Andy! Sharpening a knife freehand like that is one skill that I've never been able to perfect despite years of trying. That's the biggest reason that I strongly prefer a Scandi grind on my knives. I can easily put a nearly perfect edge on a Scandi with just a good stone & a leather strop (my leather belt has DMT diamond stropping compound rubbed into the back of it for stropping my knives in the field), but on any knife with a secondary bevel I have to use a guided sharpening system of some type to get good results. The one I prefer for field use is the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener. It's got 2 diamond stones (coarse & fine), a 3-sided ceramic rod (coarse, fine & fish hook), a small ceramic rod for sharpening serrations, a leather strop and both 20° & 25° angle guides all built into a neat pocket sized tool. I also have a DMT Diafold Magna-Guide kit that works really well, but since getting the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener I don't carry it much anymore. When I'm at home I use a Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition Knife & Tool Sharpener on knives with secondary bevels and a set of Norton Waterstones (220; 1,000; 4,000 & 8,000 grit) on any knife with a Scandi grind. I finish up on a leather strop regardless of which system I use. I also carry a 600 grit DMT Dia-Sharp credit card sharpener in my wallet at all times, just in case. Both the Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition Knife & Tool Sharpener and the Norton Waterstones are rather pricey, but the results speak for themselves! The Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener, on the other hand, costs less than $30, is very compact & weighs only about 6 ounces. You should check it out!

Hey Andy, Great Video! I took notice of the fact that you use your EZE-LAP sharpeners dry (without any lubrication such as water) in this video. Do you always prefer to use your sharpening stones dry? If so, why? Do you feel that there is any type of advantage to either using the sharpener dry or with water? Just curious. Thanks Andy!
@innerbarkoutdoors
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, Diamond Sharpeners don't require any liquid lubrication and therefore I don't use it. I don't take off much when I sharpen so there isn't a lot of dust that gets accumulated. Cleaning is easy as wiping it off on my pants or using an eraser on the ceramic side. Using water can also invite rust if you don't clean off your sharpener right away. Lubes are something that came from the wetstone days and some folks just figure to keep on doing it out of habit on diamond stones. Hope that helps!
@Lars1540

InnerBark Outdoors Very interesting indeed! So what would you do if you were sharpening your knife using a basic synthetic stone such as a silicon carbide stone or aluminum oxide stone? Would you use them wet or dry?

I'd use them wet. If it were a natural stone I'd even soak them in water.

Great vid, nice tipp to lean the knive at a tree for better control. But I have one question, wherein lies the difference of pushing the sharpeningstone towards the blade's edge compared to pulling it? (hope you know what I mean) Cheers Marc
@innerbarkoutdoors
10 жыл бұрын
The difference is micro burrs that will occor. Pushing as if you were slicing a layer off the stone keeps burrs to a minimum if not non existent. Going the other way creates little pieces of steel that hang off and create a rough edge

@innerbarkoutdoors

InNoViSiOn You'll be plenty happy with using just the 510 sharpener. The ceramic is just if you want to be OCD with your edge or if you're looking to shave. Lightening up pressure on the 510's super fine side should be all you need.

Do these ez sharpeners replace a big stone? What is the best way to get a razor sharp knife?
@innerbarkoutdoors
10 жыл бұрын
These replace a big stone for me, since my technique can service a large knife. Best way to get a razor edge is to get a thin knife with a metal that has a fine grain structure and get the edge polished with a ceramic stone or a leather strop.
