In college I was taught that the Goddess or Woman of Willendorf predated the concept of "money" and "status". Because humans were still nomadic they didn't always have food and women weren't always able to sustain pregnancy. Therefore certain women were chosen to carry that burden and they were well-fed so that they could bare children for the tribe. The chubby body is due to a combination of that and having had multiple pregnancies. They were worshipped because they were ensuring the future for their people. If Body Positive/HAES is saying people just generally worshipped fat people because they could afford to be fat they've had it wrong. Some people also argue the statue is an ancient dildo, but that's neither here nor there 🤣

I think it’s also worth noting that it used to be common for married women to not work and stay home doing housework cooking etc. This meant wives had ample time to cook homemade whole food meals for their families. Now married women’s participation in the workforce has increased dramatically, in part because it’s difficult to support your family on one parents salary. This means both parents are working typically in a sedentary job. They come home and want something easy and fast for their family. People eat out a lot more than they used to and also eat more prepackaged easy to prepare meals. I’m not saying married women working is bad or advocating for some sort of regressive conservative family structure. BUT I do think the fact that families cannot support themselves on a single income and one parent (male or female) can’t stay home to raise the kids/do housework/cook has been bad for our health and wellness.

About taxing unhealthy products: this is actually being done in other countries! I'm French and that's the reason why our cigarettes are super expensive. Most of the price is taxes to support the health care system. We also have a sugar tax, on sodas for instance (that's a more recent law than the one about smoking). It's mostly accepted. People generally use the USA as an example to convince us that we have to do something before we end up with the same obesity statistics as yours... (sorry) But we have a really good health care system that covers almost everything, so it's way easier to justify those taxes than it would be in the US I think. We basically say: "By doing this, you're going to get yourself sick and we'll have to heal you, so at least pay for it now". People who don't like taxes often don't like paying for a health care system either, so it's a compromise that mostly works.

I mean, forget the food, if everyone is ingesting either peculiar vegetarian-candy -milk or only moo-juice _fat_ in every hot drink they sip throughout every day, then yeah, I'm not surprised weight problems are ubiquitous. I mean, we do _have_ Coffee Mate Coffee Whitener here, like you often see it next to the sugar at the hot drink station in corporate spaces or waiting rooms (presumably because it's non-perishable at room temperature), but most people just use milk. Uh ok so, my input, I’m from a middle class family, and I live in America. There are supermarkets with good food fruits and vegetables where I live, every single one has one, even 711 has sliced fruits you can buy (7/11 is convenience store anyway, your not there to buy healthy food, your there to buy gas) Y’all have to remember that America is still a first world country, most places here have fruits and vegetables, it’s not a foreign thing. I think the main thing is, is that people prefer fast food over here. Every mile you will see at least one fast food joint, if not one then you will see two, three, or even four. The amount of food places is insane. Nothing here is walkable distance either, your not walking more than a mile to get to your grocery store unless you live in a city. Everything is too far away so people drive everywhere. I prefer to take daily walks anyway, to get my steps in. Not all Americans are the same, and I mentioned that I am middle class, so I am definitely more privileged than many many Americans. I also went to a middle school yesterday for my vaccination and I saw a Coca Cola vending machine... what the heck? I thought schools were supposed to teach you to eat healthy! Not sell you unhealthy things! This is also one of the big problems in the U.S, the schools sell trash food, with no fiber. Cakes, cinnamon rolls, and cookies are sold at the lunch line - I’ve had my fair share of those. Usually schools will do 30-45 minute lunches, which 5 minutes are needed to clean the place up and throw your trash/food away and 10-20 minutes are used to wait in line for food if you don’t pack your food. It’s usually hard to finish your food before you have to get up, many students eat faster because of that. On top of that, candy is also given out by teachers in the classroom. And many parents don’t pack their kids healthy lunches filled with tons of fruit and vegetables, it’s normal here for it to be a dessert, a sweet yogurt, and a sandwich (either a ham or turkey sandwich or a pb & j) maybe a side of carrots or celery, or chips. So yeah, not the most healthiest thing. The schools like to serve pasta, pizza, and sometimes you’ll get schools that’ll serve egg rolls or chicken teriyaki as part of an “Asian bowl” - the base of every school I would say though is pizza, cheese sticks, and milk, you can pick between chocolate (which has 25g of sugar) or regular milk. America seems to have an obsession with dairy. Even people who are lactose intolerant don’t avoid dairy, it annoys me a lot. A lot of schools do force you to get a side of raw vegetables and fruit, even if you won’t eat it, so most of the vegetables and fruit end up in the trash. - something really has to change... each school should at least have a compost bin for food waste...

So I started to join my dad on long runs, I would bike. And I went to an 8-week program where they explained health, but also that we were children and we should be worried or obsessed, we would grow taller and the weight would be distributed (like don't lose, but stay the same weight as you grow). A word on Food Deserts: There was a study done where they put green grocers in areas where food deserts were. The people of that area now had affordable access to fresh vegetables and fruit as well as other healthy options. What they found was while about 10% of this population made a change in their eating habits, the rest continued to shop and eat at the corner stores or fast food. The result was access doesn't have much to do with obesity, it's a lot of habit and knowledge of nutrition and food itself. Like a drug addict that has access to free rehabilitation, people won't change until they want to change, or - in cases like food - until they learn different. And it certainly doesn't help that a lot of our bad food (at least in the US) is made to be addictive.

Obesity is absolutely a systemic issue, and it's unproductive to frame it as entirely based on individual choices. Healthy high-volume foods should be more widely available and cheaper than packaged processed foods, especially in schools. When you've grown up your whole life with a poor diet, a ton of misinformation about nutrition, companies marketing unhealthy food to you, and the diet industry marketing unsustainable weight loss solutions, then you really have no good idea of what a healthy diet should look like. It took me until I was 29 to really figure out how to eat in a way that lead to healthy, sustainable weight loss.

What we ate over there was pretty much anything that was farmed. Rice and beans were stocked and stored in bulk to eat when there was nothing else. Every morning we would collect eggs from the chicken and my uncle would be milking a cow. My aunt would go to the little Conner store to buy some vegetables when not in season and juice. We would have breakfast and lunch. Dinner if we felt hungry was usually just a cup of hot chocolate or just milk with a pan dulce. No everything is so different its Americanized. I'd like to point out that basically only statements about stays and historical corsets are written and drawn by men and were most likely somewhat exaggerated representation of the upper class women. Sure, some tight laced. Tight lacing is its own thing and most likely it was not practiced among the commoners. Corsets in large were used to support breats and particulary the back during physical work. I personally like wearing corsets and making them but I do not thight lace. It gives support in right places and I am having a better posture. It is made for my measurements and only hugs from my waist. They're a bit wider from bust and hips wich creates this illusion. I prefer corsets over bras but my wardrobe, social (corrected a typo here) circle and wallet are not ready for that - letting bras go 😆

Next to the supermarket there is a fruit/vegetable store as well and a butchers shop, bakery etc. I can choose to do all my groceries at the supermarket or at the smaller places as they are literally next to each other. Also Ducth salaries generally make it very easy to be able to afford good food if you are willing to do the preparation yourself. If not well you will spend a bit more but you can easily buy any level of pre prepared food from chopped onions to sauces without added sugar to entire healthy meals to be warmed up. Plus it takes more time than ordering something from the dollar menu... Our lives are so hectic and it takes a lot of work. So, making everything from scratch is cheaper and better for you but it's time consuming, work intensive and very few can do it. It's not really practical.

What do people have to say about someone like me? I’m obese and bulimic and I want to lose weight but I’m battling with a mental disorder first? Why am I not deserving of love, but skinny anorexic girls who are just as sick as I am get more love and compassion?

Plz stop anorexic girls get tone of backlash too ... and you dont have a mmovment of anorexicacceptance neither.. no one said you were not deserving of love, every one deserv love and respect , wathever your size is . You have to battel your own demon for be able to loose the weight and you can do it! Beleive in yourself , take accomptability for your own actions, be kind with yourself and you got that!🙏❤

They would probably tell you to focus explicitly on eating disorder recovery. Fat acceptance isn't geared towards you either. At the most,, fat acceptance activists would just call you fat phobic for having an eating disorder,, so I would stay away tbh. And skinny, pro Ana content gets a TON of backlash on this platform. My friends and sisters also got crappy comments about being too skinny, society always has something to say. Actually, just stay off of social media entirely. It's full of people projecting their eating disorder onto everyone else and idt you're in a place where you can handle that

Hi, long time listener. Love your stuff. I used to be overweight myself and kept my weight at my ideal range for 15 years. Maybe the one thing I’ve ever disagreed with on the channel is the “it’s the individuals fault” when it comes to obesity. Remember, fault is not the same as responsibility. After learning what I did for my own weight loss and maintenance, not to mention the masters thesis I did on the topic, our society didn’t suddenly become mostly obese in a matter of decades because of laziness or lack of willpower. This is an environment issue and a legislative issue (fault). The only way at this point to lose weight and maintain is for the individual to do that (responsibility). If you are reading this and have been struggling with your weight, it is not your fault. Unfortunately it is your responsibility to go against the grain of your environment if you want to lose weight.

As someone with a Sociology/Anthropology degree, I love this. There is definitely a balance to find between personal and social responsibilities. When there is something going on caused solely by an individual, that’s an individual problem best solved by that person. When there are factors beyond an individual’s control but easily solvable by the larger social group, it is not inherently political, it’s just a social issue. The way you use the term “politics” in this video is a barrier to our society coming together to implement the policy’s needed to reduce or eliminate the barriers of an individual making a better choice. In other words, without the manipulation of politicians trying to maintain power by accepting money from big industries trying to make Max profits, implementing policies of taxing unhealthy additives, etc would be a no brainer. But as long as we allow ourselves to be pitted against each other and both sides protect the industry over the individual, we’ll remain in the stagnant society of obesity being a probable side effect of just living. So, we do need a “movement,” but not one of a specific issue (we must be skinny or we must get fat), we need to decide that Social Responsibility is a priority of our government. That our government’s use and function is to figure and implement the logistics of resource (food, healthcare, protection of rights) distribution and not that of maintaining global power (war, money). Only when we prioritize social responsibility and therefore equal access to transparent and quality resources (not means tested, true equal access) can an individual be truly free

Friends who have been in South America's countries like Mexico told me that sodas such as Coca-Cola were more affordable than water bottles. And the saddest part is that Coca-Cola is taking the water to make sodas. In Brazil many people and kids are obese because the unhealthy food is cheaper than vegetables. In France, it is the same too nowadays.

As someone with a background in international development, what he is saying about the globalization of the food industry and its impact on obesity and food security makes a lot of sense. There are some good programs out there working for better nutrition in different parts of the world, but the reality is that what is available and accessible (geographically and financially) tends to be cheap, processed food (especially in urban areas). Still, having lived in other countries (I am from the U.S.) where locally sources food is widely available, I can tell you we in the U.S. have been screwed. I think about the subsidies for corn and sugar farmers and, on the whole, those two alone are put into just about everything. I legitimately lost weight living abroad because the food in other places is, on the whole, healthier.

Mexican here, might be late to commenting but in 90% of the country, there's access to fresh produce and healthy foods if not at the super markets but weekly "farmers markets" or "sobre ruedas" (basically an "on wheels" market) where people can buy very affordable food, the problem in Mexico is it's addiction to Coke, as in coca cola, coke is much more cheaper and accessible even in remote little towns where water is not, so instead of drinking water when we eat, the choice beverage is coke, that on top of junk food that's also more appealing than eating healthy stuff even at a very young age, the food culture here is that if it's too complicated or long to make (and most of traditional mexican dishes are) people prefer street food over home cooked meals.

Interesting video but I agree the solutions aren’t that easy. Also conservatives and processing food isn’t all negative. We don’t need every food to be “fresh”, frozen food is processed and it’s beneficial in so many ways. Plant milks are processed to have extra nutrients added.

As a person who grew up during the 70's, I can attest to the fact that obesity definitely was not a thing, yes there were overweight/obese people, but they were in the minority. Being that obese is living like a ticking time bomb. Regardless how you want to frame it. I personally know someone who died from complications due to his obesity. For as long as I can remember he was obese. My heart just broke, he just didn't have the will power.

Soo refreshing to see this perspective I always feel like the bad guy for watching what I eat or talking about getting healthy. So often im met with "it won't last" or similar sentiments that encourage me to stop because of yo-yo dieting and the strain trying to lose weight has on your mental health.

On malnutrition and obesity being parts of food access limits, there is a serious issue called sarcopenic obesity (fat with muscle wasting). It some areas it is more common to be obese with muscle wasting than people with normal or low body weight and muscle wasting. Poor people are often unhealthy in multiple ways people don't see immediately

that part with nafta, food deserts, and obesity in Mexico hit really close to home as a citizen of the other nafta partner- Canada. Obesity here has been rising ever since nafta was signed, American products have been taking over stores, and food deserts have been growing worse. prices for produce are insane, especially in the north and in indigenous communities... so people turn to cheap American junk food. Since nafta, obesity rates have doubled in adults and tripled in children. Canada sits at the fifth spot for obesity rates.

When my girlfriend and I were visiting the USA (San Antonio and Fort Worth and a Midwest roundtrip), we were surprised you couldn't buy fresh fruit downtown. You can easily get fruit at bakeries, little shops, small supermarkets etc. everywhere here in Germany. Also, fruits and veggies were much more expensive compared to the huge packages of sweets. There definitely is a difference compared to Europe.

"We're never gonna get away from it." Indeed. I used to get so pissed at mentions of the ketogenic diet, but I've just resigned myself to the ubiquitous nature of it. Also, of course we've learned nothing, because waist trainers themselves _are specially-designed corsets._ P. S. If you want coffee that's not calorie-dense, wean yourself off the cream and start drinking coffee black. If you didn't start with black coffee from the get-go, it's very much an acquired taste, but it's worth it.

Oh, you are not far from us, and largely with a similar history from 1939. I am also concerned about these trends that are being widely promoted on a global scale; fast food restaurants and cheap fast food are spreading rapidly here as well, they are especially popular among the city's young population, overweight and obesity among children and teenagers are increasing... We still have strong gardening traditions, farmers' markets, and local patriotism in food products. But the cheap global supermarket product, with its availability and price, is a very strong competitor. Shopping according to at least two of the three principles - local, seasonal, organic - takes time, effort and is in some cases more expensive. P.S. Our stores have a lot of food products made in Poland. 🙂

The problem with diets don't working is because they aren't sustainable. Losing weight isn't a 3 month progress, starving yourself, then being skinny and keeping off the weight with going back to the way you ate before.
@leykimayri

Losing weight is a LIFETIME PROCESS. You need to completely change your lifestyle for the rest of your life. Those people starve themselves to death, because they are so obese they lose lots of weight very quickly and eventually hunger takes over and they go back to their old habits and get back all their weight and even more.

I don't think there's a war on obesity... I think the individual is the most oppressed member of society and is made to feel powerless and almost forgets how much autonomy they have over themselves. I think we're bombarded with so many diets and so many do this do that do the other thing that we forget we control our own destiny but it overwhelms people and they give up....

I’m American but I’ve had a home in a small village in Mexico for 20 years. There is an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruit throughout Mexico for cheap prices. They are literally right out of the ground from someone’s garden. Fast food and junk food are over consumed for the same reason they are in the US. Because they are highly palatable. They just frickin taste good! Plus, they are super convenient. The idea that carbs are the enemy as stated in some of the comments are absolutely false. I watched my village go from a beans and rice with vegetables local diet, to a hamburger and fries local diet. It’s the American influence that has come into the area. It’s up to each individual to decide what goes in their body. No matter their economic background. A serving of green beans is still cheaper and healthier than McDonalds fries.

There's quite a bit of evidence coming out that shows if people are obese when they conceive a child, that child's genetics will make them even more likely to become obese. So that combined with learning the lifestyle and diet of their parents is setting them on the path to obesity from birth. Who knows how bad it will be after 10 generations of obesity in a family. At the moment we're pretty much only seeing 1 or two, certainly no more than 3 generations of obesity in our population. Male sperm counts are also dropping dramatically every single year since they started studying that in the 80s. It's like nature/the Earth is trying to get rid of us.
