Pat has said he isn't the best drummer. He even said in a magazine article that didn't even know he could replicate the drums from El Camino live. That's not what the Black Keys are about. They aren't out to give you this perfect sounding product. It's a couple of dudes against the world rocking out as hard as they can and they never fail to do that. Rock on Dan and Pat.

there should be no rule in the music of the people (rock, etc) that you have to keep a beat - as a musician myself, I can appreciate that songs can evolve DURING the performance - as long as the group is together, let the beat take it where the energy and emotion takes it....that gives the edge and excitement to a live performance.

Years and years of drummers in the right tempo. Now Pat comes with a new tool: the 'based on what he feels' beat. What's the problem? If actors can improvise during a play, why can't he play as it pleases him?

I really like their music, but I think opinion the change of pace is a lack off skill, this just doesn't sound well. On the other hand, the rest of the band picks it up really smooth, witch makes the performance still a jou to watch and listen to

sorry to say and I know he's a good drummer but its the drumline.. he does 8th notes on his high-hat but while the accent of his first snare is always 4th.. thats just doesn't right considering he doesnt a sort of "ghost note" after the first snare hit everytime..

Yet another case of the guitarist carrying the tempo better than the drummer (see White Stripes and the Donnas for other noteworthy examples). It is uncomfortable watching Patrick try to even play a simple shuffle beat. They should stick with the basic non-syncopated 4/4 stuff until Patrick wants to get serious about learning how to play. Too bad, because the studio recording of the tune is amazing.
