As of the current build the Blue Mage makes the check, not the monster... "Starting when you choose this Origin at 1st level, your unique physiology allows you to absorb and permanently learn to use spells and monster abilities. When you are the target of a spell or a monster’s non-weapon ability, you may use your reaction to attempt to learn that ability. Make a Concentration check. If the ability causes damage, the DC equals 10 or half the damage you take, whichever number is higher. If the ability does not cause damage, the DC equals 8 + the creature's proficiency bonus."

Would be cool to take these features and make a Mystic, Druid, or Monk flavor. Could eat ki points instead. It'd be fun to check out

Not many Game Masters would go through the trouble of giving creatures blue magic abilities. I would love to be that Game Master. I could make up all kinds of crazy spells, throw them at the Blue Mage. Then after the whole party has been almost TPK'd I then inform the Blue Mage player, "You know that crazy over the top ability? Feast on the creature and you'll know it now". Perhaps Odessy of Theros' would be great for a Blue Mage. The Mythic Actions could be awesome.

7:45 What about going by FFVI blue mage rules were you didn’t need to be directly effected. Instead you only needed to see the ability while being of sound mind. You can go with that or go with FFIX Quina’s old fashion method of her knock out take out dinner. Kill or knock out the Beholder and eat your eye stalk of your choosing.

I feel like having to tank the ability makes it so the cr should be a bit more lenient.

Overall looks great. Main issues I have with it would be Azure Consumption, which doesn't really fit the FF11 themed BLU, and only being able to learn spells after being hit by them. Meaning no healing/support/etc spells.
@FenrisZAmarok

Doesn't necessarily say you can't learn healing or support abilities or spells. All it says is that you have to be the target of a spell or monster's non-weapon ability. Support spells are free game if you take some charm spells.

There’s also the fact that using Azure Consumption could allow the BLU to learn healing spells

I'd like to know how they get the class and abilities. Is it sorcerer like? Because I see it easier to get a wizard to give up their custom lv9 spell then hand over the way to do these things, especially to a newbie. I'd also see high level enemies hunting them down in hopes of obtaining the abilities. Multiple races even cliches hoping it's more magic than biological. Imagine a high level demon or devil blue mage for example.

As DMs what would y'all rule if a player chose this class and asked to intentionally fail a saving throw to avoid something like the disintegration ray and take the hit on purpose to try and gain the ability? I think I'd require a wisdom saving throw or maybe a constitution saving throw to overcome their innate desire for self-preservation; what are y'all's thoughts?

Hey Michael! It sort of depends on certain house rules as there isn't necessarily strict rule that allows players to opt to voluntarily fail. You may choose to allow them in your own game, but keep in mind that the CR of the creature matters too. If the CR is higher than the character's level, they can't absorb the ability. At lower levels, if they somehow survive the disintegration, they can't even take the ability. Once they are higher-level to start taking those later tier CRs, it still costs them a 6th level spell slot. So there's lots of balance implemented to make sure the player isn't full of powerful abilities that breaks the game. -Sean

What if it’s a passive ability or not attack based ability like “etheralness” or “spider climb”
@HomeBrewCrew
5 жыл бұрын
This would still apply I believe. I would rule this as a using a spell slot equal to the monsters CR per the chart to utilize the passive ability. :)
@MrDennisCordell

No passive abilities are always on that is why you don’t regenerate your sorcery points
@MrDennisCordell
4 жыл бұрын
From the link below the video “You add this ability to your Azure Lore. Each passive ability costs 1 Sorcery point to maintain, reducing the available Sorcery points by that amount. These abilities are always ‘on’ and cannot be turned off to regain access to the reserved Sorcery points. The blue mage’s form often changes to reflect the abilities learned. For example, if you gain the natural base armor of the Galeb Duhr, then your skin can take on a rocky appearance.“
