I don't agree with this movie needing more backstory or anything. We don't need to know what Ray does for a living, for instance. His job is unimportant since this is all about what's happening on his vacation and nothing else. The story is very contained as shown through the fact that it takes place in just that single location, the cul-de-sac of Suburbia. The Klopek's, we can assume, just does exactly this: murder people, take their house (and possibly values) until it's time to move on. One of them is a doctor, he could've met the Knapp's in a professional context and gotten to them that way around. As for timeline inconsistencies and such, it's nothing something that should be put too much into, this is all an analogy of the mentality of small suburbia and the disturbance of newcomers. With the horror twist that these newcomers are in fact weirdos :)
