I have to compliment this couple for their respect of the local culture. Little thing like clothing etiquette and speaking quietly when close to religious ritual. They are sincere.
that kid's english surprised me lol. his parents probably send him off for extra classes. donations basically to maintain the temple grounds. since you paid entry you didn't really need to pay more but if you went in a temple with free admission, it wouldn't be a bad idea to donate something inside.

The Chinese government treats English as a basic education, and its status is the same as that of Chinese, mathematics and other subjects. It is a core course and accounts for a large proportion in the college entrance examination. Since every Chinese student has nearly ten years of basic English education, Chinese people will adapt quickly when they go to English-speaking countries to live, study or work.

My personal understanding is that people bow to statues or Buddha images to show respect and reverence. As for burning incense, it says "three sticks per person" so it should be free. The box below is a bit like a donation. Generally, it depends on each person's ability and is voluntary rather than forced. There are many gestures and postures for burning incense due to the many Buddhist sects, but most tourists just bow. Burning incense in a temple can be understood as sending one's prayers to the Buddha along with the burning incense and candles, and hoping to receive the Buddha's blessing. The tall trees in the courtyard should be derived from the description of things in the Buddhist scriptures.
Thanks for showing us China! And for being respectful!

The little boy speaking English is so impressive, this means the Chinese Government's English as a second language policy is working. Chinese children will be able to speak the two most used language of commerce in world. Think about that for a while the most spoken language in the world today is Mandarin and the most English speakers in the world will also be in China ! How can the kids in the US and Europe even be able to compete ? Only the wealthy kids in the US are encouraged to learn Mandarin, even Trump's grandchildren are fluent in Mandarin because they know where the future lies !
On the merit box is written the words "voluntary donation", since you do not understand Chinese, the incense is free, the donation is voluntary

This temple complex has connection to the emperor. Ancient buildings in China with golden/yellow roofs are reserved for the royal family and buildings only for the emperor can have 9 little ‘statues’ on top at the side of the curved roof(like the Forbidden City in Beijing.) Lesser rank royals can only have less on the roof depending on rank. You can go spotting this different buildings all over China; also the ceiling decor is much more intricate and opulent for royal buildings.

I followed your channel not long ago, and I am glad to see you came to my hometown Kunming❤❤. I am now studying in London and will travel to Ireland when I have the chance. The West Mountain and the Yuantong Temple are places I often go to. My grandmother was a layperson at Yuantong Temple, which means she believed in Buddhism and observed fasting, but she did not become a monk. I will come to Yuantong Temple or Xishan to pray at important points in my life. If the wish is fulfilled, I will return to the temple again to "make a vow" to show my respect. The locked path leading from the Temple to the Yutong Mountain is now closed at all times. Because this road leads to the Yuantongshan Zoo behind, if you want to go, you need to buy a ticket at the front gate, so the temple road is closed. I'm sorry you didn't go to the Cuihu Lake, which is my favorite area. During World War II, when China suffered from the Japanese invasion, the top three universities in northern China were evacuated inland and eventually settled in Kunming. Cuihu Lake is where the greatest scholars of that time lived and worked, where they hid from the war, devoted themselves to learning, and protected Chinese culture. Not far from here is the former site of what was then Southwestern Associated University, where I spent my childhood. During those eight years, Kunming was also heavily bombed, and it was under such conditions that the Chinese youth and intellectuals preserved the spark of Chinese culture. The view of Cuihu Lake is also very good, and there are many historical sites around, as well as many interesting shops and bookstores, all of which were treasures that nourished my youth.

The script that Naomi scanned to translate is 普度含识. It is a Chinese phrase that suggests the idea of universally saving or ferrying all sentient beings (those with knowledge or consciousness). It conveys a notion often associated with Buddhist philosophy, where the goal is to bring enlightenment and salvation to all beings. The phrase implies a sense of universal compassion and the intention to help all sentient beings attain enlightenment.

The landscape of YuanTong Temple descends because the temple was built on YuanTong Mountain. The paths climb and descend according to the landscape of the mountain. There's a zoom behind the temple, YuanTong Zoo, which is our childhood must-go place. Yunnan University campus is also nearby, and it is worth a visit. Lots of historic sites on the campus. There are generally three types of Buddhist temples in China: Han Style Buddhist temples, Tibetan Style Buddhist temples (in Shangri-La), and Hinayana Style Buddhist temples (Thai Style, usually in Southern Yunnan, such as Xishuangbanna 西双版纳)

By the way, although there are many temples and Taoist temples in China, it is surprising that most Chinese people are not religious. But it can also be said that the Chinese have many beliefs, and they will worship any god they see, even if they have never heard of it before. Chinese people believe that worshiping God will bring blessings, but this is mostly for psychological comfort. If it doesn't work, it doesn't matter. Just wish for another god next time. In short, Chinese people's faith is not as regulated as abroad, but relatively free. It's more of a cultural practice than a religious belief.

hello. the 4 characters at around 9:30, translator app got it all wrong. In ancient texts, words should be read from right to left, so when read it, it is "普度含識“, not "識含度普“. It's a buddhism phrase, meaning" (Budda) carrying every one out of the sea of suffering". Literally 普度 or 普渡 means all crossing river, 含識 came from Sanskrit language, sattva, meaning all with emotions.
