Do you know what Linkin Park and Lil Nas X have in common? This beautiful chord progression.
The other day while driving my car I heard "Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park. I hadn't heard it in years. When it hit the chorus, I was shocked to find that I started belting "Old Town Road" because of the similarities in the harmony.
Both songs have this EXTREMELY peculiar quality of being largely in minor but making use of a major 1 chord. Further, they progress from that 1 chord to a flat-3 add9 chord. The exact sound this progression makes is unmistakeable, and you'll hear the connection right away.
One of the best ways to learn music is to start chunking together songs and material that do similar things. In this case, these songs will forever be linked in my mind because of this harmonic progression. If you know nay other songs that do this please leave me a comment! Let's grow the list!
