The Korg Volca Beats is an awesome drum machine with some tip top analog sounds and features considering it's $150 price tag. However, there's a lot that can be done to expand its functionality and get it production studio ready. This is a demo video of the mods and expansion module I made for a clients Korg Volca Beats.
Features: MIDI clock out, fixed snare drum (thanks Darren Glen,) individual outputs for each drum part plus ring noise output, CV input for controlling hat grain and ring noise pitch, CV protection circuit and enable switch so there's absolutely no chance that an external source can hurt the Beats, dedicated volume knobs for each drum part plus master mix output (so you no longer have to select a part in order to change it's volume. Mixing is much more fluid this way.) Also the Beats can be powered by a standard 9VDC (+) supply connected to the expander, (no more need for batteries or the uncommon 1.7mm (-) supply Korg designed the Beats for.)
The tom, hat, PCM and ring noise sounds come from the labeled pads on the Beats' PCB. For the individual kick I found the anode of diode D19 to be optimal. For the snare, I used the via discovered by Arvid Jense (thanks for sharing.)
This is just a taste of the mod possibilities with the Volca Beats. In the future I'd like to add more/assignable CV ins, slider controls, and possibly other more obscure audio outs.
